Problems with fuel pump?

The car is having trouble starting, the fuel pump primes, the engine turns over and tries to start but then it dies and i hear the fuel pump prime again.

I had just washed the car with jet wash but i only did main panels, and the fuel pump and wiring is segregated from the side pod, so although i am thinking it is water causing the problem i have no idea how it could possibly have found its way into the fuel pump wiring.

Also last time i got water into the fuel pump connections, it would not prime, so the fact it is priming doesnt quite add up.

Anybody got any ideas?

the plot thickens, i got the car to start but it was trying to cut out still, tickover was at about 600rpm, so i held the throttle at 2000rpm for a while t get warmed up even when warm it was till trying to cut out.

The car has been stood for 3 weeks, but when i first started it up earlier it was ticking over fine.

Anyway i thought maybe if i take it out for a drive things might start running properly again, but the car was dead on acceleration and when i took my foot off the accelerater there were very loud popping sounds from the exhaust, so i came back and opened up the rear clam only to find steam coming from the pressure cap, so its now also over heating.

It seems to have all happened after washing the car or that could just be coincidence, what could be going on?

do you have access to a wideband AFR meter ?

Test voltage to the pump with the ignition on so you can quickly rule it out, or it may point towards a dodgy relay.

Steam from cap seems odd, did your gauge say water temp was too hot? once it's cool check the level and if it's fine just ignore the steam and assume it's water from washing the car?

I agree with Mike.... check the fuse and the two relays on the bulk head, if a bad connection one of the realays will usually be hot...

The overheating had me puzzled, seems it was running on 5 cylinders but could not understand why taht would make the car overheat, then i realised that when i put the new header tank i two pressure caps one was the old faulty one and one was new, but they looked identical so i guessed, so i assuming this is the faulty pressure cap i have put on, so taht would explain that, just a coincidence it ran fine for months on the faulty pressure cap.


I will strip it down tomorrow, check the relays, fuses, coils, ecu connections etc.. unplug and give things a spray.
