i have regularly put over 55litres in over the years... and have done over 56 twice in last few months since I made my new tank (same dimensions as std but holds more fuel!!!)... tank takes more than 60 litres, the issue is you cant use the last 5-10 due to the std tank design.

My current tank I have actually ran bone dry... when the guage wasnt working i was pissed that the pumps got noisy again after all my effort to sort the issue... when i looked in the tank it was dry without even a film on the bottom (i was driving it when they got noisy).... fortunatelly I have a large swirl pot that feeds the 044's so it was only the lifter pumps that ran dry (and they can with no issues unlike the bosche).

No way! I think the most I've ever put in mine was something like 40 litres. How far did 58 get you?

I ran out once last year 200 yards from a fuel station. Put more in with a can and it took a while to get started. Then as I drove home it die (injector drives in the ECU had blown).

Not and MBE ECU so might not get the same issue?

So the sender unit probably runs out of movement when it gets to zero but the level keeps dropping maybe? I was just wondering how to judge when you're really empty. I know it's not a good idea but sometimes when you're in say France on a Sunday petrol can be hard to find.

You could always bend the rod on the sender a bit straighter so that 'empty' reads closer to the bottom. It would mean that it read full for longer but would give you a better indication to find somewhere to fill up.
