This one has just popped up on the bay

Says it's a 3R in the title, looks like a 3 to me, yes? 5 speed box, no mention of LSD or rebuild, not good. No mention of track day sump. Leather seats, were they an option for the 3 or has he got them from a 3R?

the front lights and interior would suggest it is a 'R' but i thought they all had 6 speed boxes, the fact its a car D put a grey cloud over it, id ask for proof of the work carried out on the claim.

Some early 3Rs did have 5 spd box. Think the TDS was STD on them though and I would assume as its the 5 spd it doesn't have an LSD (best ask).

Sounds like its was rear clam damage, I would want to see pictures and the bill for the repair.

Thinking it's an early 3R with the 5 speed gearbox - is this a better version of the one in the 2.5 or will it go pop at some point?

Don't think it has TDS or LSD. I wouldn't be tracking it though so not the end of the world.

Might go and see it, needs investigation into the cat d claim though.

Engine out or cut and shut chassis.

LSD guess £650 Gearbox depends on new s/hand, clutch, preparation (shotpeen) re-build.

There appears to be some cars that are an overlap of the 3 and 3R. So, while this 3R has 5-speed and no LSD, my 3 has a 6-speed box and LSD.

Hi Steve , its not a cheap job you need :

6speed box
clutch
thrust bearing
all engine mounts
new lower rear wishbone passenger side
clutch pipe adapter
gearlinkage including new cables
speedo sensor for front wheel
starter motor

its a pretty long list !!!

Has anyone on here actually gone about cutting the bottom chassis bar ? How do you think it would stand up in the eyes of insurance etc. altering the structure of the car, what if you had a rear-end smash ?

Having done it I can say you don't need a new or modified tank.. you need the correct starter and it's fine

I think the starter is very very close , will know more over the winter as I am changing to a 6 speed along with a new Jetstream engine .

I only asked as I'm using Andys old tank (from a 5 speed - if there's a difference?) on my 6 speed 3R with no issues.

Ah but did yours already have a later tank fitted? some 5 speed cars had the 6 speed tank fitted, mine was one of them, some people modified theirs with a large mallet....ouch.

The 5 speed starter is deffo different as I tried to fit the wrong starter when my one died, didn't think there were two different starters.

I think the issue is there is actually 2 starters that fit the 6 speed box (5 speed won't fit)... The difference is in the solenoid. One requires modding the tank as it actually hits the tank... The other clears.
edited to add that the5 speed physically fits the box but only when out of car as unlike the 2 6 speed ones the solonoid on the 5 speed isn't offset.

However mine and robs tank (that I now have) are identical, neither have a cut out or any kind of shape change around te starter?

My tank doesn't have any shaping to make room for the starter solenoid. There is only about 15mm between the two. (now heat wrapped tank)

if it is heat wrapped in alloy glass cloth there is a good chance of the spark jumping,15mm is too close for comfort.
