Audio upgrades
Discussion
Im thinking of getting some audio upgrades done in the form of new speakers, which is straight forward in itself. Im also looking at putting in tweeters just above the speakers. Is there room to do this does anyone know or has anyone done it already.
Also putting a small bass amp be hind seat?
Comments please.
Cheers,
Alan

The amp is not the problem, it's the sub and the box for it to go in.
Where would you put this?
I was thinking some removable speakers on the rear shelf for mine. I'll get my speaker design prog out and build a custom sub for behind the seat. Running a big power cable through the bulkhead is going to be a game (as usual) for the amp.
Alan, buy a pair of really good coaxials (kef, polk or the like) and make a pair of pods whcih fit onto the standard speaker mounts which point the axis of the speaker almost toward the opposite occupant's head (about 150mm closer to the car centre line tho) across the cabin. Ideally the sound paths from left and right speakers should be identical in length and direction towards the ears, but it will be ok if you cheat by making the furthest one away more on axis than the closer one.
Rear speakers are not needed and only confuse the image. Using a pair of 2 way component speakers can be used but kep them close (if a little higher) to the main drivers. most aftermarket tweeters alow for easy direction adjustment and can be used to centre the stage further with a little time spent.
A sub can be fitted nicely behind the seats, but design it with the fact that the cabin is very small, most sub box calcs are actually based on free air calcs (in ye house rather than inside a small cabin) and if you are not careful you'll get peaks at about 70hz or so. I have done some work in tight cabins like this and basically, you need a smaller than averge enclosure to keep things tight. I would use a 6.5" sub built into a 4th order band pass enclosure tuned between 40hz and 80hz on one side and a sealed 6.5" enclosure behind the other seat tuned to about 100hz to add mid bass (12db/oct crossovers for all (0>100hz for sub, 80-400hz for midbass and 200hz highpass for fronts). the amp can be installed behind the driver's seat above the battery, and any good 4 channel 300w rms jobbie will do. Don't forget to not block the outputs of the bandpass box and midbass driver.
Something like this will be very loud and very clear I guess. Hope this helps.

Okay, Pioneer DEH P900HDD player, C.D. MP3. 10 gig hard drive. 1 gig flash magigate. sub pre out. 50 watts mosfett built in amd.
Alpine component 170mm in door, tweeter on front of arm rest, rear Eclipse 150mm dual cone ( extremely good quility sound) fitted on to rear shelf. Noble made me a sealed box so that each speaker faced the side windows, good sound reflection, tight bass, detailed mid and upper. Pioneer allows you to set optimum sound with supplied mic. As i say 7500 miles no rattles or distortion, just tight detailed sound.
Hope this helps you . will be able to get speaker models if req.

Ooo Mr Wizz, I wouldn't mind having a quick look at that sometime (the rear boxes in particular). Another 3R in Essex. Still rather an exclusive club though
Cheers
