I'm curious about the 3R's top speed:

The specifications says top (6th) is 26.5 miles per 1000 so with max power at 6200 revs that makes 164.3mph - doesn't it?!

Hmm, how do some poeple get 170 and 180mph out of a standard car?!

Simple answers only please!!!

On nobles website it says that the 3R has a top speed of 170 mph. It should be faster than 164 because a 2.5l does 165!

I haven't heard anything bove or below 170 for the 3R.

The 3R revs to 7200rpm. That means that the gearing in top will allow 191mph, but I'm afraid only (!) 173mph is possible.

Simon, I still don't get it - where is peak power - 6200 revs or 7200 revs?

Just means that the peak/maximum power is produced at 6200rpm after which it drops off slightly but the engine will continue to rev to 7200rpm therefore still pulling all be it at at less output.
For normal driving other than outright top speed there is little point in exceeding 6200-6500 rpm through the gears as no more power is to be gained therefore you are better to change up and use the torque of the engine.

The fact that peak power is obtained at 6,200rpm yet the engine revs to 7,200rpm explains why the top speed isn't the 191mph that the gearing theoretically allows.

The top speed in this instance is limited by the power available to overcome all of the losses preventing forward motion at these speeds - predominantly aerodynamic effects and drag. There is an equilibrium point at about 6,520rpm where the (tailing off) power can't accelerate the car past 173mph.

Scientifically tested by my GPS at Bruntingthorpe she pulled:

153 Wing on into a 25mph headwind
157 Wing off into same 25mph headwind
160 Wing on into a 10mph ish headwind

Putting the low figures into context, DAZ's 996TT only managed 173 the 25mph headwind day. His same car ran high 180's with less headwind.

Top Speed is pub talk anyway. The Noble is one of the quickest cars out there 0-115ish, after that my Jag would out-accelerate it! (OK, so the Jag is a 405bhp V8 Supercharged monster )

I wish to present the following evidence m'lud that doeth show that the "terriblusnicesiustblokus" who is currently represented within these four walls of said court room by his mostest noble self has a prior facination with 0-60 times.

Evideneience I would like to present to the bench is

"Good to see that the Audi barge was second quickest on the list, missing out to the blown Porker by only 0.1 sec on the 0-60 dash."

This inital exhibitiatioion of his factination with the 0-60 can be fully reference at the following, if m'lud will forgive me for using this new fangualed Internetsminternet speak, "U...R....L" of
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&h=0&t=82670

We then find later that again Mr niceywiceypants

"Objection m'lud - there is no need for that emelishment"

"Granted"

I'm sorry - Mr JeremyC then, at the following errul

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&h=&t=97102

My final eviedence, that I think will demonstrate the the jury that "pub banter this is not" is found here

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=52622

within which upon given the question by a jooly nice, innocent fellow called "Pete" asking

"That'll be 0-60mph with four wheels, roof optional of course......is it feasible?"

Mr J.C. replies "A Caterham or Westfield would get you there."

I rest the case for the presecution, Mmmmmmmm'lud

Now where did I say pub banter was a bad thing then.

I'm just as much a bore with the numbers as anyone else....

Now, wheres my pint.
