Just got back from Abbey Motorsport in Oxted having watched my lil' baby dance on the dynos for the guys down there.

Was a wee bit odd watching the car buzzing away held up the air by 2 red boxes.

Anyway, according to the computer thingy, she pumped out 251 bhp at about 6000, at the wheels (unadjusted). Considering that the chap didn't really push it - it was hotter than a camels whatsits and not that much moving air - I was quite impressed.

Also the temp gauge never got above about 95.! Cool.. literally.

Then on the way home I passed a lovely 3R in a great metallic Iceblue colour. Oh happy day.

Ed, "251bhp at 6000 revs" - I'm no expert but thought that the M12's max power was around 5700 revs so why such a low bhp reading?!

That'll be at the wheels as opposed to the flywheel - what was the adjusted figure calculated using costdown?

Looks for dyno plot....

Hmm - 260 at the wheel looks a bit low. Was there forced air over the intercooler and at the air intakes? If not the temerature will affect things (there is an equation I found the other day that I can dig out if anyone's interested).

FYI 280bhp approx at the wheels is boggo standard 2.5l when done in "test conditions" - I haven't got the upgraded 2.5l which is almost the same as the 3.0l to hand - sorry.

If they are doing all the dynoing in a warm room with no airflow, I guess all FI cars are going to be down on power in the game!

Abbey Motorsport have got an amazing dyno set up. The fans they have are powerful enough to change the air in the room every 3 seconds if my memory serves correctly.

All I can think is that they had trouble directing the airflow to the back of the car where the intercooler is.

Remember, they are primarily Nissan Skyline experts, which have their intercoolers at the front of the car, so the fans are situated nice and close.

It's a nice setting though isn't it? Not many farms are subjected to the sound of thunder all day long.

Bugger - sounds fantastic. Shame I couldn't make it.

It would be good to "compare plots" on another dyno.

Abbey Motorsports own Skyline GT-R achieved 1015 bhp at the hubs (from memory) on their dynapack, and I believe this was at around 2.0 bar of boost, so they have no problems with cooling

Laurence,

Looking at www.abbeymotorsport.co.uk/Content/dynapack.htm it seems the fans are indeed at the front of the testing cell (about halfway down).

They need a "noonoo" extension to get that air to the back of an M12 - wonder if they had/have one?

I've not been there for a while (I worked there in 2001), so I'm not sure if they have a fan suitable for mid-engined cars - but judging by the aforementioned power figure, I would guess that they don't!

That Dynapack really is a good bit of kit though. It's more accurate than any rolling road, and once they threw it in the back of their van and took it to Silverstone to demonstrate it at Trax.

On a side note, Mark who works there is magic with an ECU. His mapping work is very highly regarded indeed.

I fancy an Skyline R34 GTR next, and AM is the only place I'll be taking it. Not many people get to see how garages operate from the inside, but I've been lucky - they are 100% genuine, and so will get 100% of my business.

a change of air every 3 seconds is a gale blowing through .. should be well capable of keeping the car cool .. at noble motorsport where the cars are mapped / engines built their dyno is a change every 12 seconds or so I think and I've seen 430bhp from lee's noble there under the guidance of trevor/darren.. very impressive it was too
