2014 i20 paint falling off
Discussion
I don't know if anyone else has had this or how they resolved it.
We have a white i20 purchased new in 2014, as a family runabout. At about 4 yrs old an accident necessitated new front wings bonnet and grill, the only body work that's been done. Always handwashed except once, we used a local hand carwash in 2018.
After another 6 months late 2018 I noticed paint falling off the rear driver side door and boot lid under the window. Looks like the paint hasn't bonded with the primer. The 2 worst panels are door and boot lid but all the panels from the A pillar back have been effected.
Anyhoo paint is flaking all round now (except the previously repaired areas) Looks a right mess. I did have some photos but lost them. The paintworks down to primer, not corroding so must be galvanised.
I took it to Hyundai, and received a gallic shrug, took it to a body shop who hadn't seen anything like it and couldn't propose a cost effective repair.
A respray would not be worthwhile, Otherwise the car is sound, and useful little tool, albeit pretty scruffy. Probably keep it until the wheels fall off
Meanwhile I've handpainted the worst areas in Hammerite, just to protect the metal and prevent the edges flaking even more.
I suspect 2 things have gone on.
Poor paint combined with harsh car wash chemicals, which is why the resprayed front hasn't suffered.
What's prompted this post is I saw another white i20, similar year and similar problems the other day. Unfortunately I didn't see the owner to ask.
Anyone else suffered this problem?

IIRC Hyundai have a 12 year paint and corrosion warranty. Time to get them to honour it.
Corrosion is 12 years, paint is only 5.Unfortunately should have been presented to a dealer when the first paint started flaking off, zero hope of getting anything nearly 5 years late.
