Are Kia’s any good?
Discussion
I've done 40,000 miles in less than 2 years in a 13 year old Kia. The car hasn't needed more than consumables.
So old ones still work in my experience.
People buy new ones. So someone likes them.
However I've learned that it's best to buy what you like, rather than what strangers in the internet like..

I've had 2 and not because I set out to get a Kia. Just happened to be the right car with the right spec at the right price.
Had a Sorento 10 years ago and wife's car is currently a Rio.
They evoke nothing. No emotion. They are a white goods vehicle and the literal A to B of motoring.
Drive ok, feel solid enough for their class but they don't do anything particularly well, just everything ok.
Ran both mine out of warranty and so far nothing major has gone wrong. The interiors havent worn that well as their plastics and leather for the wheel aren't great. They do cost more to service than most equivalents weirdly enough and their parts never seem to be that cheap.

We've had a 2012 rio for the last 8 years. Picked it up on 400 miles now on 109k & out of warranty.
Warranty was good even paid out for a engine rebuild, new injectors & new ecu at 90k/6.5 ur old.
As above its a to b transport. Not sporty in the slightest. We bought ours as I wanted a reliable cheap runner with a long warranty for the missus to ferry the kids around.
Interior is beginning to show its age but it has had 2 kids bouncing around inside for majority of our ownership. Paint is very very thin & marks very easily.
It's no more or no less reliable than other manufactures really just has a longer warranty.
the service history must be impeccable for the warranty to be fully honoured.
Our relationship with the dealer soured towards the end of the warranty period but kia UK over ruled the rejection of work.
Were currently looking at a new shape rio now to replace ours

Worth looking at what Kia is doing in the US market. They recently introduced the Telluride SUV, and though it would no doubt be a flop on PH it is blowing the competition out of the water over here. Luxury SUV quality for economy SUV price tag.
Of course, I just bought a GMC over the Kia, because... Kia. But I definitely would slot them in the “good car” slot. Just not a car I want.

Depends entirely on how you qualify 'good'.
Good to one person means reliable.
Good to another person means cheap to buy and run.
Good to another person means has high mpg.
Good to another person means it has sophisticated tech and infotainment.
Good to another person means it looks stylish.
Good to another person means powerful.
Good to another person means great driving characteristics.
Good to another person means fun to drive.
Good to another person means being a great all-rounder.
What's good to you?
Then we can answer if Kias are good or not.

Is Telluride really considered mid-size? I can’t see it coming to Europe - it’s the same size as a FFRR.Of course, I just bought a GMC over the Kia, because... Kia. But I definitely would slot them in the “good car” slot. Just not a car I want.
The current Sportage is a capable car, has reasonable kit level but its just........bland.
It isnt particularly frugal - well the 2lt permanent 4x4 diesel isnt anyway - it isnt particularly well constructed, it isnt particularly sporty. Just bland.
Having said all that, it gets you from a to b in a degree of comfort and they are reliable.

I spent months going around in circles trying to decide what to buy my wife for our first family car. I originally settled on a newer Suzuki Vitara but was disappointed by how cheap they feel and how badly the interior was wearing on the 30K mile car we test drove. Considered some German alternatives like a Tiguan but ultimately ended up buying a 2017 Sportage 4 1.7 diesel for similar money.
Nearly four years left on the warranty, reasonably priced, loads of toys, quality feels somewhere between the Vitara and a Tiguan, drives well and I like the way it looks too. Can't comment on reliability although we did just have rear suspension bushes replaced under warranty during a minor service at 40K miles. Thoroughly impressed with it so far and feel like I made the right decision!
