After having my Mk7.5 Golf GTI Performance for a year I’m seriously considering a late, high spec Golf R, apart from being expensive for a hot hatch, any other reason why I shouldn’t?

The times when you need them to be boring are as important as anything to me.

I like the looks of the Megan’s, maybe I should try one. They’re are few and far between though, especially in the colours I’d be wanting.

And it’ll get robbed and you already have a golf. Try something different?
Like?

And yes, the Golf has been that impressive as a day to day car.

I think the Mk8 Golf R is quite a good steer. Not worthy of the abuse it gets on here at all.

Suppose depends on your budget but there is the A45s and the RS3. The RS3 is brilliant!

Smaller and more compromised for daily driving there is the Yaris GR which will be cheaper.

You also have some fantastic rivals that are FWD like the Civic Type R, Megane RS (criminally underrated this gen) and Focus ST.

Used choices to seriously but maybe save a few £ is an M2, Focus RS or Alfa Guilia Quadrifoglio.

Really out their if you don’t need a hatch and can do a 2 seater you have the F-Type or a Toyota Supra.
RS3 is a little bit ‘in your face’. Plus I only like the saloon, but only have a hatch parking space.

The Yaris is obviously a good steer, but I want a car where the usability comes first.

The Mk3 FRS is just a little bit nasty, and I’ll lump the CTR into this sentence as I want DSG or similar.

The Golf R budget would get me a slightly older A45 AMG, but for me, the Golf is more appealing.

What would you buy for the budget out of interest?
Megane. As I mentioned earlier.
I know they softened them up a bit, but are they anywhere near where a Golf sits?

The previous RS Megane was quite nasty, particularly with the Cup chassis.

Fair mate.

You can’t really go wrong with the Golf R.

Might be worth trying to pick up at Golf R 20th Anniversary in the hope it handles depreciation a bit better.
They aren’t anymore expensive now.

You probably know this, but shares it's engine with the more powerful version of the Alpine...
I looked at that yesterday, very nice… apart from the wheels IMO. Are the Recaros heated? A must have once you’ve had them biggrin

I didn’t think much of the last model at all. Obviously a great car at covering ground, but once that’s not your priority, it falls down as an overall package.

Love the look of them, though.

No.

As someone else said, get a 7.5R and a remap. Far better ride and interior quality than many rivals, 4x4, cheap to insure and tax, goes like stink in all weathers.

Rather than just an excellent spirited drive like, say a Honda or Megane, with a Golf R it's the sum of its parts that count.
The Mk8 is a better car, which has finally grown on me..

I’m not one for getting a car mapped, plus I’m sure the Mk8 R is fast enough.

Oh, and my Mk7.5 GTI looks better than the R smile

Taking the plunge on a 24 plate Golf R 20, white, pan roof and Akrapovic exhaust. Can’t have it for 2 months though, as it’s pre registered.

Blue wheels, though…

Thanks… I’ve not driven one yet though, they’re sorting me one to have a drive in, though, maybe tomorrow.

Test drove a car for the first time today, great to drive, the lack of buttons aren’t the issue the road testers made out.

Just wanted to run something by you all.

Due to buy my Mk8 R 20 years on Saturday. It’s white, has all options except winter pack and DCC, which isn’t a problem. It’s a pre registered 24 plate with 13 miles on it.

The price is £45,500, which is approximately £10k off list.

The fly in the ointment, the 8.5 R has been debued now, some parts of it look great, no driving differences though.

I estimate the same spec in an 8.5 to be priced between £55-60k.

I think I should stick with the option I have now, as the facelift parts aren’t really worth £10k. Thoughts?

Poor still from the dealers poor video smile

It’s new tech, so has every chance of having glitches 2 months down the line.

The Black Edition looks great, but the new forged alloys look like they’re going to be an expensive option, too.

So fine, it was for sale on Apr 4, and still is now.
I do like those, there must be a reason they weren’t big sellers, though?

Top Tip, the button on the end of the indicator stalk brings up lane assist in your dash, click “set” on your steering wheel to cancel it.
The lane assist is the least invasive I’ve come across.
