Hi there, I’m having trouble deciding what would be a good estate purchase. I have a budget of £5k and am looking for a ULEZ compliant estate that is relatively good on fuel. I’m currently stuck in two minds. 1. Buy something older with a larger and more reliable engine. 2. Buy something more modern that is better on fuel with a smaller engine and pay less tax. I don’t do an awful lot of driving but when I do it tends to be long distance drives of an hour or longer. Any advice or help would be brilliant. Cheers

Honestly, buy an Astra. They are brilliant estates. Lots out there with decent engines and history etc.

I have an 2018 ex fire service 1.0T at the moment. It sips fuel and does 50mpg.

I hadn't considered an E200 and kind of settled on a Honda CRV as I need a large, high boot. Generally, what are these petrol E200'S like of this age to run and maintain ...p.s. ive got a bit more than £5k to spend.

In general they're very make sure the supercharger service has been done.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming you meant very reliable, yes?

Anything else to look out for in particular on the E200?

I've been seriously consider dropping £10k on a 2.2 diesel CRV (and remapping it) as a dog taxi and "holiday" car. I'd get a 2012/13/14 model for that money.

I've just found a "2010 (60) E200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Sport 5dr Tip Auto" with 80k miles for £6.5k and i'm really tempted as I like the idea of Merc comfort and I've never had one before- and I've have £3k for any "surprises".

In general, would you say the Merc is the better bang for the buck?

Thanks again, really appreciate your time and knowledge.

Looks great but I don't think the boot is tall enough inside, I have a very large dog who sots over 80cm from bum to head . I've had a Civic for 14 years.

You're not the OP. I was suggesting it to him.

Good luck with your search.

Go bigger petrol NA and suck up the increase in VED, MPG is relative to how you drive them think along the lines of....Mondeo/Insignia/Avensis if you need big boots - all ULEZ compliant (1.8 to 2.0 petrols).

Less potential headaches than the small turbo-charged petrols.

I'd say yes it sounds like you've found a decent one.

A leftfield but reliable alternative is a QX50, they're loaded with kit reliable & ULEZ compliant but check the boot to make sure it works for you:
