I bought a car back in June from a dealership in Bristol, and I've been waiting for my new V5C registration document to show up for weeks now. Today, I contacted the DVLA, and they told me they haven't received any change of ownership from the dealership. Now, I have to fill out a V62 form for a lost registration document, which will cost me £25. I've tried getting in touch with the dealership, but they’re not responding. Is there a legal obligation for them to inform the DVLA about the change of ownership? Any advice would be really appreciated!

How do they "not respond" to a phone call?

If they don't sort it out after the phone call just pay the £25 & move on with life, it is stressful enough without heaping more onto your self.

How many weeks is “ weeks “ ?
Irrespective if no phone answered or email possible then I think paying the £25 as E says is wrong but in the scheme of life just less stressful.
I’m assuming you aren’t close to the dealer demographically ?

Dealers often wait a few weeks nowadays before doing the keeper change.

Whether that's right, or not, is open to discussion, but that's the reality.

It's because some people return a car if it's got a fault, or develops one soon after sale, and they don't want another owner adding if they've got to refund it.

If you've waited more than 5 weeks just give them a call.

Demographically means relating to the study of human populations, including traits like age, gender, and income.

Presumably you mean geographically...

Same thing just happened to me. Wait 4 weeks then fill out the V62 and send them your green slip, I received mine today, a week later. No charge.

nearly 6 weeks since the purchase and the dealership is around 100 miles away. Just cant understand why dealers do this it only gives them a bad name.

Was it SOR?

If it's SOR some of the dodgier ones don't notify the owner so they can be creative with cash flow, and to get a new V5 they'd need to notify the owner.

Or it could just be they lost it in their to-do list.

Apologies you are quite right - clearly I wasn’t thinking correctly but luckily the OP knew exactly what I meant to say when I tried to give some advice.

In which case that’s long enough - hope the phone call / email gets answered.

I had the same, the admin side of the purchase tainted and otherwise great buying experience but it did cost me money as I had to pay my insurer to out my 'plate on as it was after their grave period where changes are free.

Bit of a faff but the process was easy to follow and efficient.

Not an ex-demo is it? I’ve had the V5 held back on a car once after the dealer sold it to me and I had to wait about 8 weeks before I got the V5 from them.

How did you get a no charge for the V62 application?

If the dealer is from Europe I can help.

It's free if you are the new keeper and the logbook doesn't arrive within 4 weeks of you buying the car, you just need the green slip from the old V5.

From the V62...

Because it was within a 4-5 week period. Any later and you pay. See above.

You should not have accepted the car without it, how did you buy road tax?

You didn't I presume, or they did it for you using the document number on the original V5c. Hopefully, they used the document number on the green slip (same as the one on the front with an extra digit), otherwise, with a change of keeper, it will be cancelled, a refund sent to the previous keeper and you'll have to buy it again, losing a month in the process. frown

Have you ever bought a car before?

New keeper will lose 11+ (or 5+) months of road tax, surely, since they won't see the refund at all?
