Looking to buy a new car in the next few months, want to buy outright no finance so originally landed on an insignia (preferably vx line) but then noticed mondeos between 2012-2015 seem to have some great options so wondered if people had any experiences.

Im pretty easy between hatch / estate, I would prefer the 240bhp petrol but understand most are auto, not an issue but the gearbox's seem to have a bad rep?

Is £5000 or so for a 12 year old mondeo around 100k a stupid idea?

No, through our work with Ford main agent, quite a few sheddy ones come our way, part ex clearance cars.

Never scrapped one, they always go again with a little help.

Powershift auto isn't great though.

One was a 2.5t titanium x sport with a manual gearbox 57 plate, traded it and it ended up being retailed for a lot more than 5k, it was a 57 plate.

Had my 2009 titanium x estate for 8 years now, auto diesel 212k miles and still going, main draw for me at the time was it had adaptive cruise. It's had the belts done when I got it and only oil changed every year, had an advisory for sill corrosion last year and is going when a replacement tesla arrives for my wife. If the tax wasn't 430 quid a year I'd keep it as its not worth a lot.

People seem to get very confused when it comes to Ford auto gearboxes. This is probably down to the fact that they are all labelled "Powershift" but they don't all use the same technology.

The auto gearbox in the 240hp petrol mondeo is absolutely fine. It's a traditional torque converter auto box.

Sounds like a good option then - ideally leaning more towards the 2.0t auto, but will consider diesel also - buy the car not the engine I suppose!

Thanks guys

I have not one, but TWO Mondeos....

Not the sport versions admittedly. One diesel, one petrol. Both manual.

The white one is a 2.0 TDCi Duratorq Business Edition - 173,000 miles. Just had to have clutch and flywheel done (flywheel was vibrating, clutch was ok)
I've had this since it was less than two years old.

The silver one is is 2.0 Dureteq HE Titanium X (86,000 miles, has recently had a new fuel pump).
I've had this about three years now.

They are fantastic cars and they go on forever.

They are also possibly the only Mondeos in existence with PH stickers!

Out of pure curiosity, why do you have two practically identical mondeos?

Everyone asks that!

I like Mondeos! biggrin

They're actually very different, as cars, even though they look cosmetically the same.

Before I had the silver one, I had a MK3 Mondeo that I'd had since I was 17. Unfortunately it died in 2023. Piston rings. I hadn't originally intended to replace it with another Mondeo but...a perfect one dropped into my lap! Mondeos seems to materialise around me.

However the next car I get won't be a Mondeo. I'm kind of done with them now. I'll be keeping these two but getting a more "fun" car to go with them.

The mk5 is a traditional auto but the mk4.5’s 2.0 petrols (what the OP is interested in) are dual clutch I believe - they use the Getrag 6DCT450 which is known to have issues.

Happy to be proven wrong because I was really interested in this particular model myself, however I remember reading about “chocolate” powershift boxes of that era, which then put me off.

The boxes are no worse than the VAG DSG's but both can cause issues & neither are cheap to sort, the diesel will have a conventional auto.

Does your usage suit a diesel?

With your budget in mind I'd go for the Insignia in Elite form:

If you don't mind a CAT car then you could get a last of the Line Insignia in 1.5T form:

If a diesel works for you take a look at the Q50:

Q70:
