Dear all,

I'm after some help picking a new family wagon.

I'm currently in a 3 year old cupra formentor v2 4wd (used value 24-25k as trade in), it was supposed to a long term buy, but it has been remarkably unreliable as it not as big as we though! We don't quite have enough space for a growing family with all the stuff that goes with family trips/holidays to Devon etc.

We were looking at a used Rav4 or Lexus hybrid, but with the cost of petrol and pay per mile hybrid tax, even if burning petrol, I'm reconsidering.

There are two options, one is sell the car, take a lease for now (the only thing I like the look of at the moment is the ford explorer deal especially as it appears to come with a free charger and 10000 miles credit). This would also free up a bit of extra cash for house renovations.

The other option is to buy a second hand EV. I would be after something reliable and about 3 years old (20-25k) that can take 2 adults two small children, buggy & stuff for family trip etc. I really like the polestar 2 but suspect there's not enough room.

Most of my miles are short local runs except 2-3 long trips a year.
Where would your money go?

It depends how much "stuff" you carry but my Polestar 2 has had plenty space for the last 3 years for my family of 4 including now 6 and 8 year olds.

Back seats are limited for adults but there should be no issues with younger kids. The boot is a decent enough size too but again it comes down to how big your buggy is and what else you take with you. A full travel system style pram would probably fill the boot but a lighter one would be manageable with other luggage.

I suspect it'd be fine once were past the needing a travel system and travel buggy/2 travel buggies.

I always figured I'd just find a way to make all the stuff go in, but it's tricker than I imagined!

The Polestar 2 is longer than the Formentor, so probably worth collecting together all your various baby buggies and making a visit to a showroom, sure they'd let you try out the boot and decide if it's viable for you.

RIDC has some good status on boot dimensions https://www.ridc.org.uk/features-reviews/out-and-a... - looks like the PS2 has 20cm longer boot floor than the Formentor, for example.

I'd check the VW ID4 and Skoda Enyaq too, I think they're fairly spacious inside.

At that price point I'd be leasing the Ford or buying a Skoda Enyak. Both spacious and capable at respective price points.

Do you know about the current lease deal on Tesla model 3?

No deposit and £295 a month.

I d be going for that for ease, if it’s big enough.

My assumption would be that all the baby buggies mentioned won't readily slot into the Model 3's letterbox boot opening. However I guess that could be an assumption worth the OP checking.

Absolutely this. The model Y is better than the Cupra in every way - that was one of the worst cars Ive ever had, luckily was only for two weeks as a hire car.

The AWD MY is much more spacious, boot is far bigger, several orders of magnitude faster, much much nicer to drive, corners better, grips better, interior is better quality, sound system is far better than the st one in the Cupra, the Cupra engine sounds like a warehouse air con unit so the silence of the tesla is a massive improvement, and it makes the media system on the Cupra look like a toy. The only thing I liked in the tormentor was the changable but pointless speedo layout, and ride was softer.

I upgraded from a top spec lexus NX to a model Y, the tesla is much the better car, though I wished the seats were as comfy as the lexus

Get the MY with 19" wheels, not 20. You'll love it.

You might get a used scenic etech in your budget, I have one on lease and it’s been great as the family wagon, surpassed my expectations. I don’t think the cheap lease deals are around on them atm.

VW id4 with the updates rwd motor is also a nice car.

If buying used I think you can extended the warranty on both via manufacturer, essential I would say on any of these cars.

This is a good call- the back seats move so you can maximise either boot space or rear leg room as needed. Another car well within your price range is the Mustang Mach E.

I was going to say the Mach e (good cars OP) but not sure if the boot will work for the OP, the model Y's rough ride plus general lack of good fit & finish long term make them a no for me.

brilliant value daily family cars IMO

Ariya / Enyaq / Scenic / Ioniq 5 would all be suitable for your purpose, the Ariya has huge interior space but a slightly smaller boot than the Scenic albeit they are sister cars.

I have an Explorer and tbh, it sounds ideal for what you want. If you don't lease one, then look at them used, they seem like a reasonable used buy these days?

There's plenty of room in it and so far (not to jinx myself) it's been reliable and cheap to run.

I opted for a Model 3 over the Polestar 2 as the P2 was just too cramped inside. It was beautifully made though and would have bought it if we didn't have kids. Model 3 boot is bigger and the opening is really big for a saloon, but obviously not as handy as the hatch. Much more spacious inside than the P2 too, although the fit and finish isn't great (but the other benefits outweigh that for me). A Model Y will be even better in terms of space.

We had a Mustang Mach E hire car for 10 days in Italy last year and it really surprised me with how good it was. An Extended Range AWD is on my list for replacing the missus' car this year. Also high on the list is the later iX3 in M Sport Plus trim which you'll get plenty of options under £25k and seem very well regarded according to a recent thread on here. The full fat BMW iX can also be had for around £25k these days.

Another shout for the Tesla MY, had my dual motor MY for coming up to 2 years, everything just works, the app is very good and charging when away from home is a doddle.

Plenty of choice at your price point, dual motor model is plenty quick (4.8 to 60 if that's your thing), done a few longer journeys the most recent was a trip to Manchester which is 280 mile round trip for me and did it without having to charge (left home with 100% and got home with 7% remaining thanks to slow traffic and roadworks, otherwise would have needed a 5 min charge on the way).
