I’m looking online at Volvo XC40s and Nissan Qashqais, up to two years old ,10,000 miles and hopefully under £30,000. I’ve not taken either for a test drive yet, are there any other similar cars I should be considering - requirement is 4 doors and a reasonable sized boot.
Since it’ll be our only car I’m not sure I’d want to go fully electric but I’m all ears.

Qashqai is a load of rubbish, the car itself isn't too bad but I'd never place it in the same class (prestige) as a Volvo. Personally I'd look at the VW Tiguan (or T-Roc if its big enough for you) and the Seat/Skoda equivalents. I'd not bother with the Audi equivalent, I don't think its as good and would be more expensive.

Avoid Range Rover Evoque at all costs, if its a diesel it will be the infamous Ingenium. If its a petrol, everything except the engine will probably break in due course. Also avoid the Ford Puma (1.0 Ecoboom).

How about Toyota or lexus.
Would be a hybrid but they will both give you a 10 year warranty on the drive system.

Still glad that people wont buy cars with "mileage" . Thank god these people think this is the panacea of used car knowledge.

Its the manufacturer, and some of the engines. Nissan is not a good place to be.

If (and only if) you can charge at home, I'd say it's worth considering electric as it'll be cheaper to run. If you only drive further than 200 miles a few times a year, the odd charging stop after 3-4 hours driving is usually more of a welcome break than a nuisance.

Polestar 2 - similar underpinnings to the XC40 but a bit longer and lower, not as big as the ID4 but feels more premium/plush inside

If you're car shopping I'd say it's worth test driving an EV, if you don't like it then at least you're choosing from a position of experience.


On the Qashqai, if you do a lot of urban driving you might look out for the e-Power hybrid which is very economical in this sort of use (65mpg)

Or a Kia Sportage (underneath it is similar to the Hyundai Tucson but with a sporty look).

Take a look at the scenic etech, great spec on all models big range, standard heat pump, nice to drive and place to be. Peanuts to run and service.

All those hybrids are relatively expensive to service yearly vs any EV if that matters.

The Kia sportage HEV I had wasn t great on fuel at all I found, nice car though.

We have a B4 mild hybrid XC40. It is quite thirsty on fuel and I wish the engine was bit more powerful for the size of the car. We average 28mpg which isn't amazing IMO. I wish we went for the T5 recharge version, I did test drive one of these recently but the cost to change was to much.
If budget allows, consider that.

I've just bought a 2024 Skoda Karoq SEL 1.5TSi to replace the Seat Leon I had owned for 7 years. I also considered the Seat Ateca & Kia Sportage.

I choose the Karoq as it has a better spec & ride comfort than the Ateca although cost more. Compared with the Sportage it is about the same price but smaller which suited my needs better.

30k is not too far off a 2024 Tesla certified Model Y long range, imagine you'd get one on autotrader for less if EV was an option.

There’s some great advice here, many cars I’d not considered.
The mpg in the Volvo XC40 is a bit of a shocker, I’ve got a diesel countryman at present which returns over 50mpg ave, and a diesel E class coupe which averages mid to high 40s.
The electric options look very good but I’m just a bit nervous about the whole battery thing and how long until it needs a complete replacement.
I’ve got a drive and garage so charging wouldn’t be an issue , longest journeys are 100 or so miles, mainly just local 20 mile round trip.

Say you got the ID.4 above, if it needed a replacement battery before April 2033 then that would be done for free by VW (transferable 8 year battery warranty on EVs). So you could buy it, keep it for say five or six years, and it'd still be covered when you come to sell it. Compared to a petrol or diesel car where there's a small risk of a big bill for an engine or gearbox failure beyond typically three years, to me the EV option feels a relatively smaller risk. (Plus, 75% saving on fuel costs, no need to visit petrol stations, smooth instant torque in urban driving).
