It's been a good number of years since I bought a 2nd hand car of considerable (to me!) value. A quick Google suggests there are approximately a bazillion different car check sites out there promising you peace of mind.

Is there a gold standard site out there? Or are they all much of a muchness?

It sounds a good car, but just want to check there's no skeletons lurking in the cupboard. It's a 25k-ish car, so whatever the check costs is trivial compared to the potential pitfalls.

I use V check.

But - be careful that the site you think you're using is the actual site. The last time I needed it, I searched for V check. I clicked on the V check result. I didn't notice that the site it took me to wasn't V check, and got a call a few weeks later from my credit card company telling me that the company was trying to bill me monthly.

There is a thread about it on here somewhere, but basically just check the web address does match the company you think you're using

Vcheck, via their website www.vcheck.uk

Car vertical might be another shout. I checked a car recently and it turned out it had had a repair - not a write off - that car vertical picked up on that neither vcheck nor CAP HPI showed.

Just to hammer the point home - VCheck. Don’t use anything else.

Thanks all.

Just purchased a full report from them. The worst it could find is that the car is not ULEZ exempt! Other than that a sea of green ticks and nothing to worry about.

Hopefully tomorrow brings some fast and loud good news ... smile

Damn - a day late.

I went with the HPI Multi-check. Made one check and have no idea how to redeem the other 2.

Looking at VCheck, wish I'd used them.

Hi,

I did a search on vcheck.co.uk on a car and found out that it has an outstanding finance.

The car is advertised is at a dealer. How to get prove that the car is clean when I pay for it and take it away?

Regards

It could be a stocking loan, ask the dealer if it's that.

Its been a while since I did mine, I am sure it showed as a stocking loan rather than vehicle finance

Just to close this off ... the car was a good one, a deal was agreed and I've left a deposit & will collect the car once it's been to a marque specialist for a few bits & bobs that the seller already had booked in.

Thanks again to everyone who steered me to V check.

I managed to get the other 2 HPI checks redeemed - the code had to be reset. Couple of issues thrown up on the first two I checked, so pulled out of travelling to view the cars.

I've also bought the 3 vcheck bundle. It does show stocking finance as outstanding finance.

My niece used the youtubers favourite, Car Vertical. She had $10k to buy an Audi Q2 so used their service to check out her prospective service. As it came back with all green ticks she went ahead. Unfortunately the seller was a liar and the vehicle came via an auction, having been previously stolen and recovered. She then tried contacting CV but they took days to respond to her. When they did they were arrogant and unprofessional. Certaionly not was expected from them. Anyway, the matter is with the courts but I would always advise avoiding CV.
