So ive always liked the 8 series coupe.. madness really as huge car.. very little practicality yet we all desire odd things right.

Sensible head says 840D is the pick.. good power with sensible economy when needed ...

But ive been thinking why not hell Mary it and go in on a m850i..

Not made of money sadly so my budget is around 35 to 38k...

Whats people views?.. is it worth a dip for some fun?

For me, it would purely depend on how many miles I was likely to drive.

Less than 5,000/year then I'pd have the M850i, more than 15,000/year then the 840D - anywhere in between and it'd be down to spec/price.

...although I'd probably look for the Gran Coupe version for the easier rear-entry.

Ironically enough, I've just started looking at cars to replace my 340i Shadow Edition. The 8 series is a car I completely forgot. I started looking at local garages and one has an 840i and I started looking into it. Driven+ YouTube channel also released a review of the M850i yesterday which highlighted my desire to also own one. £35 - £40k is my budget and you can get 840i's and M850i's around that area. I'm happy with the B58 engine but I believe they only come in RWD. One of the drivers to sell my car is I miss xDrive. The M850i's sound lovely and have xDrive.

Diesel is no good to me with my usage which is mainly shorter runs. Fuel economy isn't a factor as I only do around 5k miles a year.

Should you get one? The biggest concern I come across is the reliability of the N63. I've had 2 B58's and the N55 which were totally reliable. The earlier N63 engines seem to have a lot of issues and I'm not too sure on the more recent ones but I've heard you need to go post 2021which pushes the price of the car up. After owning a VW Transporter, I can't go through the engine management light hell. I saw that light in my sleep!

I'm still undecided so looking into it more.

Yeah my mileage is only about 8-10k... I have driven the 840d and thought it was hell of a lot of performance for the money.

I think id like to get something a bit more special and at 35/38k there are some ok options...

I didnt know about the reliability issues, few google checks and the N63 post the early year ones seem ok?

You'll get a lot of M850i for your budget & they're a good car, if you can live with the fuel consumption then that get my vote:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202512238...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202601229...

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202602119...

The other option is the S560:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304066...

Or S500, both are imo nicer places to be & they don't lack pace BUT they're not as good a steer:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202511228...

Also no AMG tax plus they'll depreciate slower a little tickle & they're at AMG bhp.

It’s a big car and drives big.

Test drove an M850i and didn’t think it was as nice as the 840d.

The diesel has so much more grunt than the 50i down low.

I really wanted to love the V8 but it was a bit meh really.

I hear they have surprisingly small interior for such a big car.
Would love one, but they aren't rated for towing, which I need.

I've had the S63 version of the N63 in an M5 and the 40d B57 in a 7series, both have masses of torque low down but the N63 in the 850i has more 750nm vs a max of 700nm in the later MHT 840ds both make it from around 1800 rpm but the 50i holds on to it to 4600rpm rather 2250rpm, the 40d makes you think it's really quick if you short shift but the S/N63 goes ballistic if you stretch its legs (but you have to question when you can actually do that these days.)

I do think I fancy the 850i.. get it out of my system...depreciation curve has come off so they are pretty safe bets in the mid to late 30's...

I am a member of an 8 series FB group and lots of owners of 850 and M8 complain of expansion tank issues leading to faulty injectors (mainly US though). So if you get a BMW approved used one, at least you know you are covered.

Yeah that's exactly where my £40k would go if that were the budget I had, it's a lot of car and they are still one of the nicest looking modernish BMWs in my opinion.

My eye was turned by the S class posted above I think it'd still be the BMW. A lot of road presence, comfortable, quick. A slightly firmer, lower budget Continental GT to be honest, that was my initial impression, but was only a passenger.

I've just gone from an 840d to an M550i (Both 2021)

Your budget is plenty for a very high spec 840 or older 850.

I bought the 840 early last year from Sytner with 50k on it and sold last month. That was mid miles and BMW approved well within budget (31k), 40d engine works brilliantly with the 8 speed auto and whilst the 550 is quicker the 840 was more snappy and responsive where it feels like the 50i needs to take a breath then get going

Mpg difference isn't as much as you think, on a run the 40d got 50s and a couple of weeks ago on a run up from Worcester I got 37 in the 50i using cruise at 70 and 50 where they had a limit on (3 hour run) day to day its around 28-31 mpg. My average in the 840 was about 40 but it was driven a bit harder.

Best of luck!

Sounds like you've gone through a very similar thought process as I did! I wanted 4wd too for a daily so that ruled out the 840i, but tales of reliability woes put me off the M850i - I'm not interested in a BMW dealer being able to sort stuff out under warranty if it goes wrong I just need it to not go wrong in the first place, plus I tend to keep cars for a long time. I've nothing against diesel per se but in something like that (and in particular in a convertible which I was after)...not sure. As it turns out I ended up going for an M440i which does have Xdrive for some reason, plus more room in the rear despite being a bit smaller externally vs the 8. V. happy so far.

I think both are great cars, the only thing that puts me off is the insured warranty price, absolutely insane.

If you're willing to pay the warranty price and aren't doing 20k+ miles a year, the 850i is the obvious choice.

If you pick the 840d, how much will you save in fuel, £2k a year?
