Discussion
I’d like a classic but can’t think of anything that fits the bill, welcome suggestions, brief below
- classic or emerging classic, but one with modern usability (motorway, reliability, long distance use etc)
- 2 seater or 2+2
- cab ideally but hard top ok.
- 6+ cylinders, 3L+ ideally more
- ideally not too wide as we’ve a lot of narrow lanes near us
- high days / holidays / weekend car
- ideally largely depreciated
What suggestions do you have?

This is a real problem for owning a more recent expensive car, the width. My Sunday Summer car is not overly wide but still living on my nerves when exiting main roads for smaller narrower lanes. Cars coming the other way, potholes on the side as you squeeze past each other.it's hard to look past a 911 aircooled
cab/ targa/ coupe options available and most still appreciating - small cars too

Here are a few that popped into my head at that kind of budget, lower or slightly higher.

911.
Predictable as this answer is, it’s the first thing I thought of as soon as width was mentioned. 996’s are a similar width to most air cooled cars and feel quite modern to drive. They feel narrow. 997’s aren’t crazy wide either if you stick to the narrow body cars. Advantage of those two over earlier cars aside from their usability is that £50k buys you a superb example with an awful lot of change. Modern astons are wide. Most stuff is. I like the z3 idea above.
Merc r107? Or r129?
BMW z1?

Thanks all., for suggestions this far
I think a 911 is logical but budget won't buy a good 964, 993 or 3.2..... but otherwise perfect
Vantage seems decent value.by comparison.
Slk55 perhaps....
Tvrs don't meet my reliability criteria for long distance use.
Vantage and slk both around 1900mm wide. If that sort of width is acceptable there are loads of options. A Vantage would certainly be a really nice option. Though personally I’d prefer a manual one rather than the auto linked. Though I guess if SLK’s are on the cards you might be thinking along the lines of an auto? Tiptronic 911’s are almost always much cheaper than manuals…. I’d be amazed if £50k couldn’t buy a nice 993 tip cab or targa.
