A friend is looking for a new car, currently has a 320i and hoping to move up a class. Also looking for more performance as well. The obvious choice is the 540i, though just does not seem that interesting and may feel too similar to his F30. M340i is a budget creep and he is set on moving to the next segment.

His budget is circa 20K, he has always had petrols and does a mix of city driving but also long journeys every few weeks. He could be open to the right diesel though it’d needs to be future proof, local to a LEZ zone. No driveway to charge which rules out EV. Would need to have a premium feel, Lexus came to mind and so did Genesis though not sure if they d be quick or dynamic enough.

Any suggestions? Mainly just him in the car though when doing long trips it’s usually 4/5 up. Body style wise he’s always had saloons though open to an SUV or estate

I’ve got a 2020 G30 520d - it’s a great car , although I’m considering selling it - I test drove an 840i recently which has the same engine as the 540i. Sure it’s quicker but it’s not a fast car in my opinion, my old S5 felt miles quicker and sportier. I don’t think the engine really suits the big cars all that much better in the 1/3 series. Torque is the answer for big cars.

The 520d is fine power wise unless wanted to drive more spiritedly , mines a mild hybrid with 10hp e boost not that you feel it. Bloody good on fuel though.

Completely contrarian - are there still Tesla Model S available with lifetime free supercharging? Takes away the driveway charging issue, bigger and faster than a 3 series BMW.
