I am in a position to buy a nice weekend sports to lower end supercar, but may need to liquidate relatively quickly in 12m time depending on earnings next 12-24m. So ability to onward sell in a few months privately is key so I don’t take a big dealer spread hit.

Generally, I change my daily sports saloon cars every 6-12m and buy fairly well so familiar with the fun and games of onward selling privately / motorway etc. Currently drive an E63S 2017 (epic car).

Criteria
- 2-4 seats, ideally a 2+2
- reliable but accept sports car maintenance
- fun / an event to drive at 30 as well as quicker
- sub 5 seconds to 60
- relatively easy to onward sell privately (and this is probably the hardest criteria I suspect)
- price range quite wide - £20-£75k
- 2013-18 to avoid the initial depreciation

The onward sell bit is really hard to research, I can form a view on everything else quite easily….

Thanks guys.

With the world teetering on the bring of trade wars, tariffs and recession I think you would be very brave to assume that any car that you are considering will not take a hit over such a short time frame.

2 choices:

Porsche 991.1/991.2 GTS (BEST BET) – Always liquid, easy to sell privately.

BMW M4 Competition (QUICK SALE) – High demand, easy to shift.

AMG GT, they're at a nice price point & are a proper sports car but it might be to much Mercedes for your household:

Last year plenty of 911 and M Car owners were complaining they couldn't shift their cars privately. Don't know where the market is currently but it could easily spiral southwards.

Your criteria offers lots of options. Maybe something like a 911 or Evora to minimise depreciation and meet the sports car, rather than GT, brief. The latter don't seem to be depreciating at all. Plus 2 V8s might not feel sufficiently different to the Merc.

For the best chance of a future private sale I'd recommend something you could move on with the balance of a manufacturers extended warranty.

I had similar budget and came from a 911. I looked at R8s and everything else up to 80k ish and after 5 years still
delighted with my Boxster Spyder. Can’t think what I’d swap it for. This is where my money would go (tho not white)

I think I'd go for a Porsche too.

But you could save some money and get a nice 981 Boxster S for around £30k.

I think they will remain popular as the later Boxster was downgraded to a 2.0 4 cylinder. And less initial outlay means you have less to lose later.

I would be tempted by an Evora 400, stunning sound from the V6

Or an Aston V8 Vantage

Thanks guys, some good ideas.

AMG GT - love them but not atm due to existing MB
Porsche 911 - had one before, will have another, just not drawn to one right now
Lotus Evora - high on the list
Jag F Type 5.0 also appealing

How easy it is to sell on is all going to come down to how much of a financial hit you consider acceptable for the 12 months of fun?

You mention a preference for a 2+2 which rules out many of the suggestions so far. A 2015 Vanquish or Maserati MC Straddle would seem to meet the brief and be a real event. Buy well and use a good independent for any maintenance and you should be able to get out of it fairly easily.

A 911 or Alpine A110 the sensible option, but not much of an event in comparison.

The Jag and the Lotus will be hardest to sell on quickly and privately it depends on how important that is to you.

Don't think it hits your sub 5 second's criteria, but I can't imagine a GR86 really depreciating much anytime soon. Maybe a Yaris GR too? Get both and have a real blast?

This. The ability to vulture a great purchase deal will pay back handsomely later.

Has an E63S as his daily, looking for a sports/low end supercar that's special, and your suggestion is 2 toyotas?

I love this place. smile

OK maybe the Yaris is a hatch back that's been made to go quick. But what part of a GR86 is not a sports car? I guess special is subjective. But it's rare enough that you probably won't see many others on your drive up the hills. It's a balanced and now with just enough power to really hustle along. I did neglect to read the requirement for a potential low end supercar though. I was thinking more of something that was pretty much depreciation proof for a year of ownership and probably quick to sell at the right price. My bad.
