Selling a car on motorway?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm planning to sell my f80 m3 on motorway soon, they've offered me 32k as a valuation. I've got 20k left on the finance but wanted to ask if anyone has any experience selling with them. I know I should never trust the valuation offer but if I play my cards right, will I be able to get more than the valuation price.
Please move in to relevant category if it's not allowed here.
Thanks

The main complaint is that Motorway is basically auctioning your car and then introducing you to the winner.
The likes of We Buy Any Car purchase your car directly.
We've had good results with Motorway, firstly a Yaris GR and then a Hi-Lux pick-up. Set a reserve and if it doesn't make it, then no sale!. It seems to be dealers that bid and buy, so as long as it has been described correctly, they don't mess about - turn up quick and pay by BACS before they drive off, after a cursory look around it. Both of mine were very tidy (Yaris was as new) so no issues, no commission and no WBAC shenanigans...
I sold a Golf R wagon through Motorway earlier this year.
All went smoothly.
Bloke turned up, took it for a 5 minute test drive. They did notice a previous owner had removed the mid baffle on the exhaust system, so knocked the price down £200 (price of one on eBay), which seemed fair. Paid by bank transfer and left.
Much less hassle than having lots of test pilots and muppets turn up to haggle.
And, the best part, if they turn up and don't offer the full agreed price then you can tell them to do one and sell elsewhere anyway. You're only under any obligation to sell at the price that was bid.

Just sold my mother’s Fiat 500 with Motorway.
Chap turns up after a 3 hour drive and gives it a thoroughly good check over, phoned office who reduced the offer by £1k, or 20%.
Told the chap to do one, and make his own way home. It was 9.30pm at this time and he couldn’t get home.
He called his office, and they increased the offer by £300, again, told him to start walking.
Offered another £200.00, and the deal was done.
The agreed price I felt was fair as he identified that the cambelt was overdue.
He was happy as he got a car to drive home in.
Would use again

I just sold my car via them this morning.
Process was smooth and I got between a private sale price and WBAC. It was lower than the original valuation which was basically the private sale price.
I think the experience very much depends on the buying dealer, you hear some stories of dealers turing up and chipping down the winning bid. Motorway state that all damage including stone chips should be photographed which with an older car is just unrealistic and does allow some dealers to be overly fussy. In my case I got the full winnings bid.
Being prepared to walk away from the deal is critical if they start chipping.
Also worth highlighting that Quidco and top cashback offer some decent cashback for a sale.

I had our XC60 up for sale with them and it 'sold' for the reserve price, which was lower than I ideally wanted.
I contacted them and decided not to proceed with the sale at the moment 'as I still needed to use the car'... they were ok with that and were happy for me to contact them again when I wanted to sell it.
The main issue with them is that you are dealing with the company who are advertising / auctioning it for you. Its only as good / smooth a sale as the dealer that buys it in the auction...

I sold my previous lease (Seat Leon) on Motorway. No issues, chap just turned up and checked the car out, money transferred while we were stood around chatting and by close of play that day VWFS confirmed that finance had been cleared on the car. I even got a grand or so more for it than they anticipated.
Very happy to recommend Motorway.
I sold my Golf GTI with them - the transaction couldn’t have been easier, and I got significantly more than the reserve price (admittedly the car was spotless).
One tip is that if you have a mint condition car, take more than the minimum number of photographs of the car that they specify - so that you can illustrate the condition of the car, and tell Motorway of any USP’s on the car that may help secure the bidding dealers interest.
The helpful guy at Motorway told me after the auction had completed that at one point there were around 16 dealers bidding against each other for my car, which was why final price was so far ahead of the reserve.
