Golf R is the apparent answer or S3. I don’t mind a prefacelift i.e. 7R over 7.5 as lower mileage compared to newer one. However i’m wondering if a 2015 S3 will feel dynamically dated at all? It’d be my first awd petrol turbo so will impress me anyway.

Am I missing anything else?
The rivals like A35 amg & m135i xdrive came out later so are nearer 20K.
The first gen A45 appeals on power but think it’ll be costlier to run and looks tired now.
I majority of the time don’t need rear doors/seats but overall probably a better decision to go for them. However if not I was really into TTs because basically a lighter S3 with a nicer interior.

Obviously i’m after something fairly modern which rules out evos and imprezas. My usage is mostly urban which would probably suit an ev but got no charging capability at all anyway.

Is a Skoda Superb 280 in budget?

It's built on the same running gear as a Golf R, with a slightly detuned engine.
More space, comfy, sub 6 seconds to 60, and capable of 40mpg+ on a run.

The digital dash makes a huge difference and feels much more modern compared to analog dials

None of the above are a drivers car, so dynamically they cover an all rounder setup rather than the drivers choice which is fine but understand what you're buying.

A45, they cost a bit more to run but depreciate slower.

TT RS again a more costly to run but they depreciate slower & imo are a better//more special feeling car than the 2.0T VAG options:

Personally I prefer the Golf R to the S3.

I wouldn’t get too caught up in a 7 vs a 7.5 unless you are really keen on the updated interior. Still have the same problems eg: leaking rear doors, water pumps and chocolate clutches.

An alternative option is an Audi RSQ3 with the fabulous 2.5L engine that is in the RS3 but a nicer interior than the previous gen.

Also have the Audi S1 to maybe consider

Thanks for the suggestions. I don’t need the practicality 90% of the time definitely not an estate which rules out skoda or the leon st.

That old rs3 looks so good to me and as I do low mileage I think I could get away with a juicier car. Though to be honest I want to get something from “this” gen hence looking at the golf r. Same applies to the rsq3 which sounds great too but is based on that old rs3 platform. As I said i’m not an enthusiast driver so whether it will make a noticeable difference to me probably not. I feel a 2.5T or even the b58 would be wasted on the majority of my driving which is mostly urban and maybe the 2.0t could do better there? Not a fan of a class interior, cla looks nice and i know they’re rapid. They should of put the 45 engine in the infiniti that would’ve been something.

I lean to the s3 because it’s saloon format plus maybe got less nvh than the golf? Doesn’t need to give me much feedback or anything I just want something “high quality” feeling that grips and is quick. Obviously these are all the entry level models but I don’t really need anymore car plus i’m mid 20s which rules out the porsche lol. F30 bmw look decent value and the fully loaded ones are prob better quality than an S3 but only xdrive in diesel afaik
