What might you suggest with the following criteria;
Budget £20k ish.
4wd.
4/5 doors.
Less than 70k miles.
Less than 10yrs old.
No less than real world 25mpg.
No diesels.
I don't need Lotus handling or feedback, need an interesting all year round car that'll fit kids and do a tip run.
Thinking RSQ3, Golf R, M135i xdrive.

How does an Audi S4 grab you? Bit nicer than a Golf R and has a V6 instead of a 4 pot. You could get a 2015-2017 saloon in that budget I think.

They look a bit meh to me but looking at Audi I hadn't really thought of the S5 5 door. That's quite nice, reviews seem pretty good. So thank you.

No worries, I wouldn't have thought about an Audi myself, except for the fact that I am picking up an RS5 at the weekend

Id be concerned about build quality with the Stelvio. A35 is a good shout. The Mini back doors would do my head in. Arteon looks nice, not quite my thing though. Cheers!

I'm normally not a Merc fan but that A35 does look good in white.

Pretty subtle as well but would need to get rid of the black badges for chrome and maybe change the wheel colour to a dark grey.

Ford Focus RS

That one's a relatively understated example. Not sure if you'd want the chavvy image that goes with them but by all accounts they're very good cars to drive.

I was thinking a late MK7.5 Golf R with good optional extras like DCC, Dynaudio etc until I saw the tip run requirements.

I have the Cupra which is effectively a fwd Golf R, and they really are not very big. You also lose some boot space due to the haldex system on the Golf.

I would consider the Cupra estate in 4wd or an R estate.

Quick search has the S3 standing out to me, two here with very different looks!

I do like the S3 but I think I prefer the look of the mk7.5 Golf.
The S5 is doing it for me right now.

S5 is a nice car. I do like this shade of blue:
