Hi all,

I'm in process of looking to buy a touring car, ive kind of decided already that it will be a BMW 340D as its hard to find anything that beats it in terms of performance and bang for buck. ( Looked at Audi 4 series S line but reading about them they don't quite compare )

My question is;

With budget of 30-35k what should i be realistically expecting with that?

ideally <50k millage
2021-22 i say this as i HATE the LCD screens and 2020 is now nearly 5 years old so unsure about the issues id face with servicing ect on a older model (although is it worth considering IF spec much better?)

Spec wise, there not many it seems options/packs it around on the touring models that i have seen compared to esates ie comfort/ technology packs, is this from those with these cars a big must have?

Thanks in advance for any help .

For 35k, you could get a year old BMW 5 series Touring Plug-in Hybrid.

If you are interested in town driving on electricity only, it's one to investigate.

35k for your criteria seems a lot of money for not a lot of car.

Yous think but a search on auto trader and there isn't that much to choose from, especially bmw340d wise, very few 21/22 models have any sort of "packs" and most are standard fitted.

And yes it's a "boring" car choice, have plenty of excitement in life so don't need to live through my car lol.

5 series are tad big to be honest as drove one recently and found 3 series the right amount of space.

Price wise, with dealerships I'm guessing there's still a decent enough haggle room on these models?

Cheers for replies excuse the "touring" clickbait

You're right enough the prices of these are holding up very well indeed. I imagine the in-gear acceleration is pretty impressive (I do like BMW oil burners). As for options I don't have direct experience in terms of what pack to get but do pay attention to the interior-some of the materials used appear very cheap-there is a nasty flimsy patterned plastic material used in the central area round the gear stick even in high end models. Not sure if it is supposed to resemble a carbon fibre weave but struck me as poor when I was renting one a while back.

Yes you will find they generally have poor spec and those that don’t sell for a decent premium. Many don’t have electric seats/lumbar support. There are none on Autotrader under £35k which have adaptive cruise (Driving Assistant Professional pack).

It's surprising that with the M340d being an M-lite that it would have rather better equipment/interior as standard.

very much!.

I'm in two minds of whether to hold off until new year Jan and see if the market changes much with what's available or accept that its still a bloody good touring car and the basic spec will suffice.

Audi S line ive looked into and spec wise you do get more as basic, but the cost is nearer £40k for similar year and millage.

Did you see the S4's I listed?

They're diesel by the way & apart from the 400d Mercedes unit I'd say it's one of the sweetest drivetrans.

The S4 interiors look higher quality as well.

A 340d Touring of this era is a great buy and most come very well specified. There a great drive and you won’t be disappointed.

Most don't come very well specified at all, hence the discussion in this thread. By 'well specified' I'd expect HUD, electric seats, lumbar support, pan roof and adaptive cruise. Try seeing how many of those are on Autotrader and how much they are.

The lack of standard electric seats is annoying, although something you can live with. The rest of the car and driving dynamics make up for it. My 440 has various option packs although no electric sears. I’ve had electric seats on my cars for years even going as far back to the mid 90’s in my (Rotten in every sense of the word) Rover 827 Vitesse.

Not an estate but go try a Kia Stinger. 360+ bhp, quite a practical boot and every single toy the Germans charge for is standard. I did try and find a 340i estate with the options I wanted and gave up.
