Hi all,

Looking for advice on an M340i touring deal - this looks like a good deal to me but seeking any thoughts / confirmation as the dealer has been clear there's no movement given demand for these:

  • 2020 M340i Touring
  • £35k price
  • Just under 40k miles
  • 1 owner, full BMW service history
  • Approved used i.e. with proper warranty etc.
  • All the option packs (premium pack i.e. pan roof, tech pack, comfort pack, visibility pack (laser lights)
  • Plus Driving Assistant Plus (adaptive cruise) and Parking Assistant Plus
  • Grey with black Vernasca leather
I've been looking for one with a pan roof and adaptive cruise which has been hard to find - Autotrader had this one around £2k below market average and the combination of the spec and the approved used makes me think it's a decent deal. Even if it hurts me not to get any additional discount! Last time I tried to buy an approved used one of these it went immediately hence I reserved this the second I saw it! But conscious this is still slightly nuts post-COVID pricing...

Thanks in advance!

Advice: buy it.

In fact, stop fking about and buy it.

It has what you want, there are few around, and it's approved used and you missed the last one.

I repeat, stop fking about and buy it.

5 minutes on AT will tell you if it’s in the right ballpark. If it is the colour spec and condition / history then snap it up. They are not rare cars but when you’ve got a demanding spec list you need to be prepared to act quickly.

If you procrastinate over it someone else will snap it up fairly quickly and you will be back where you started again.

There doesn't seem to be that many around and assuming the SORN are damaged or for sale then not many available to buy either. Looks like the M340D is more feely available. So looks like as others said and especially if it's the spec your after best get it bought.

For what it is depreciation hasn't been too bad losing what £15k over 4 years (based on the TRL price discounted). It's a lot but far from what it'd have been pre COVID.

The estates do appear to command a decent premium over the saloons, there aren't many under £35k. If it is a rare spec and you want it then go for it.

If it's the spec you've been looking for then buy it.

I currently have an M340i touring and it's the best all-round car I've ever owned. Had some saloons previously but the estate is another level, especially with the pano roof.

Gosh that's expensive - seems to be holding its value very well.

If it's a desirable spec then it's normally worth paying the extra for your own enjoyment and future value when you decide to sell.

BMW revised the retained value on the touring just before this year's 2nd facelift.

The GFMV of mine (arrived March) is £27k after four years and 40k miles, which at trade appears to be about right. The facelift added 10% to the cost of an equivalent car spec-for-spec, so I'd expect them to hover around the mid £30ks for a while.

Great cars, and holding their value well. Paid £42k for my 2020 m340i touring new, 4 years later could get £32/33k trade.

Not a direct comparison but I've just bought a saloon m340i MHT 2021 approved used two weeks ago from the local BMW dealer.

30,000 Miles
Portimao blue
Comfort plus pack
Technology pack

I paid £34000, which is a bit more than I anticipated spending. I was thinking around the £30k mark but I quickly discovered it was quite tricky finding a well spec’d car. There were no other comfort plus pack (non plus doesn't have electric seats!) and tech pack cars in Portimao blue and only a handful of cars with comfort (non plus)/tech pack cars of various other colours for sale. There were a lot of ‘shadow line’ cars, black grill, mirrors and wheels but it’s purely styling – they don’t come with any packs as standard. Oddly BMW approved website lists theses are ‘high specification’ cars despite the lack of comfort/tech pack.

There seems to be a fairly wide gulf in prices - I've seen low spec, 50,000ish miles, 2019 saloon cars for £25,000 and pre-LCI wagons mid/high 30's/knocking on the door of £40k.

It was surprisingly difficult to find a comfort plus and tech pack car and coming from a fully loaded 2014 M235i - I just couldn't accept going back to manual seats (however pedantic and first world problem that sounds!) I had my M235i for 5 years and I was happy to pay a bit more for a car that I’ll likely keep for 5 years (unless I can afford an M3 xDrive at some point!)

I'd say at £35,000, with all those options ticked, and considering the premium the wagons have over the saloon, that it's a good deal if it ticks all the boxes you're after.

Decent spec on a used 3 series is going to push the price up significantly. Adaptive cruise is a fairly rare option and being a touring makers it rarer still so if you are demanding specific options you are going to have to pay the price if you want the car. You're going to have to sacrifice something if you don't want to pay that much.

Have you looked at the option of ordering a new one? At £35k for a 4 year old car with 40k miles you can't be far from being better off buying a new car with everything you want if you're planning on keeping it long term.

BMW have started being even meaner with spec. Add a few options and you will be north of £65k although you'd get a bit of discount on that. Quite a difference from £35k.

Thanks all. It is indeed on the drive!

Re a new one, first a new one with this spec would be around £70k (pre any discount I know) and secondly I don't like the post-LCI cabin (lower quality in my opinion, no physical air controls, no proper gear lever, etc.).

Great advice all!

Recently got a quote through CarWow and offers were 15% off list price.

Adaptive Cruise is also a standalone £600 option now rather than having to get the full Driving Assistant Plus package.

Carwow quotes were 15% off list last time I checked so knocking a decent amount off. Say £25k more for a car that's 4 years newer doesn't seem like a crazy amount for this level of car, especially if you're planning to keep them until 7-8 years old.
