I’m very fortunate to soon be in a position to purchase a weekend Supercar/Sportscar and I would be really keen to get some feedback on some options I’ve shortlisted and also any new suggestions.

I’m coming out of a stage 1 MB c63s and now looking more for a weekend toy. It will be for road use and it won’t be tracked.

I will likely purchase the car outright. I know buying a car like this for future value isn’t something I should make decisions on. But that is a factor if I can make a sensible purchase so the value holds as best as possible.

My shortlist is as follows:

- Mclaren 570s - fast and has the wow factor, but reliability scares me and I don’t think they sound particularly good.

- MB AMG GT-R - love the look and road presence but the same engine as my c63s so I’m worried it might be too familiar.

- Porsche 911 991.1 GT3 - amazing sound and exciting drive, but concerns are the known engine issues with the .1 as .2 is a little out of the price range. I also worry whether it would feel a little underpowered. My current car is approx 580hp

Audi R8 V10 plus - in love with the sound track but wonder if it has the wow factor.

Nissan GTR - no doubt amazing, but pretty common and I’m not sure it’s as impressive as an all round package compared to the others on the list.

I’ve also looked at astons, but they’re not really my cup of tea. And. Jag F-Types don’t really interest me. Nor does anything from lotus.

I’m also not really interested in older Ferraris or Lambo’s etc.

If anyone has any experience owning or driving any of these cars or has any other suggestions I would really appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Don't try to rationalise it.

Just buy the one that gives you the fizz.

Best possible answer.

Everyone’s ideal £100k car will be different. Me, I’d buy a 70’s 911 or try to get a scabby LHD Pantera.

Buy whatever makes your bks tingle and enjoy it!

That's as much as needs to be said really and probably why I ended up with an F430 Spider.

As above 100%, don't overthink it or write down a list of positive and negatives, just go and poke around and drive the cars which would make you giggle like a small child when you opened the garage door.

For me these would be -

Vantage V12

or

R8 V10

Happy shopping!

Cheers,

Chris

Had similar thoughts 5 years ago.

After driving a 570s there was no choice, bought a new one - still have it smile

Another vote for buying with your head

If it were me I’d have a GT3 with a Mezger engine. 997.2 looks the business and I think will look after you value-wise.

Similar story here, hired a 570S for a long weekend (££££), about 15 minutes after leaving the hire place and having not exceeded 40mph I'd basically decided it was what I wanted, just for the steering feel and response. Went for a 570GT mainly for the looks, have enjoyed the last 18 months with it immensely. It's not just the speed, it's the way it puts you in touch with the drive. For me it's worth putting up with a less good engine note in exchange for a more feelsome, responsive chassis, but other people's priorities differ.

In terms of reliability there aren't really any widespread disastrous problems, they're probably a safer bet than your average Land Rover diesel and loads of people buy those. I think cars later in each model's production run tend to be less hassle, but whatever car, with the right expertise looking after it should be fine - there are more issues with poor dealership service than with the cars themselves IMHO.

I've had my first 'failure' this summer, A/C leak, hopefully won't be too involved to fix.

For me it's such a special thing, it feels a lot more exciting than anything else for the same money.

I’d be looking at the NSX or one of these:

The big question is always, once you've bought it where are you going to go in it?

Some people would say:
If you can buy it for £100k, it's not really a Supercar.

Whatever a supercar is meant to be.

I think the answer is whatever you personally like most, to the point you'll pay big money for it.
I've had 'superbikes'.
A superbike is more readily defined due to superbike racing series.
What the 'best' is is still incredibly variable depending on what you want from it.
If you wanted to win races, you'd have a clear target.
If you want to use it every day, commute, and enjoy, it's hard to measure.

How old is to old? A fair few F430 under £100k got the looks, noise and special feeling?

After that V10 R8, sounds the best, manual or flappy paddle, didn’t say if you’d prefer either or?

A few of your options are probably not going to feel overly fast after your C63 as they have monstrous low down torque so any NA will feel ‘slow’ until up and ‘on it’.

I actually rather like this, sound great and plenty change for some Bamford Rose tweaks,

I’d got for 650s spider over a 570, extra supercar drama and usefully more top end, £90k for a nice one.

Had a vanquish before, that was a nice car for the same money. The McLaren is a ‘supercar. The vantage in any guise is a Sportscar.

In the right colour, you won’t loose a penny. A FF would be a good shout, just a bit more to run than a 650s

Some people claim a Hayabusa is a superbike. Wasn't it the world's fastest bike?

I'd be going for a GT3 I think.
It certainly wouldn't feel slow, even compared to your 63. It will be a totally different connection and drive.

£100k gets you in a 650S spider. With change for a proper PPI and a warranty. Nothing else at that price will come close in terms of performance and handling. IME the McLaren reliability thing is an internet trollfest - certainly I've had no problems in 20k miles in the three I've owned. I've just done 3,000 miles through France and Spain in 10 days in my 750; and that's a couple of weeks after taking it round Silverstone (which did mean new brake pads but no other drama).
