As per my previous thread, I have been looking at 335 and 535d tourers and think I may have found one.

Now, our drive can take a few cars, but we really need to get rid of some. I recently got rid of my 1980 XR3 cry Have 2 other cars we need to get rid, wondering how people sell the older cars, as in better to use Autotrader, or as they are old Gumtree, or somewhere completely different. Different situations for both cars too, reasons below. Or even just scrap.

Wish it was as easy as selling my LSB M3, don't need to try with that, people just come up and ask!

1st car. 2011 Mondeo Titanium Estate, 250k miles (ish) but, no MOT and has been stood for a year, SORN'd, no insurance, failed MOT on the rear springs. and has a leaky injector. (smells in cabin) Still drives like new, and even looks like a couple of year old car. Should i just scrap (seems a shame)

2nd car. 2014 Peugeot 2008 HDI Allure, still using (until we collect new car) 1.6d, High miler, 177k so far, just had cambelt, and approx 1.5k of work done (in last 12 months) only issue is a few bits of banging from some noisy bushes. 12 months MOT, £20 year tax, really economical. Very good condition, did look at WBAC, but they offer 900. Unless that's about right?

If anyone could offer any advice that would be great.

Gumtree is worth a look.

FB Marketplace.

Both are free.

Yes, unfortunatley that comes with it.

The Mondeo being out of MoT will be difficult to shift, but someone may want it for spares or to repair - it has scrap value if you could get it to a scrapyard - less if they come and collect.

The Peugeot should sell but it won't have a huge value.

EBay is marginally better in that regard. Facebook is the pits. Unless you genuinely are looking to swap for a PS4 and a staffy.

I think I’d agree with above. For stuff like this eBay auctions usually work okay. Be 100% honest about the condition and they should end up going in a timely fashion.

I'd probably scrap them. Too much probable hassle, for little return.

I am a total luddite.

Gumtree, and FB marketplace, but, change the ad about every 3 days. As in, delete the current one, put up new one. Makes a huge difference. New pics of you can.

Yes messers, easy to bin, they send numbers so just ignore, as in "6", seeming to think that has some sort of meaning, or they're scammers wanting you to buy a report for the car or similar - the language is telling as they send so many skank attempts daily they just say "your item" or similar as they're not legit.

Weirdest sale, FB, had just binned a scammer. Seconds later new contact "I will be with you by 7, where are you?" I gave a post code, not an address. No questions, no details asked for. I replied saying to please let me know when they were on their way, so I knew to stay in. Message at 6.30, "traffic, looks like 8". I was thinking of deleting, and 8.10, it's dark, in central Glasgow, another message, "hi, here".

25 mins later she's driving off in a 2004 M3 cab, full price transferred there and then.

So you never know.

Scrap the Mondeo. My 12 month MOT, 165k miles 2012 plate one is worth about £1,200 according to the autotrader app as a private sale, so your going to have to put a lot of effort in to get any more than scrap for yours. (About £240). Yes you could ebay it and maybe it will make £300, but by the time you have paid ebay fees and dealt with whoever has bought it, the return on your time looks a little slim.

As for the other one, any of the sites will do, its just a trade off of cost to advertise vs volume of nutters you are likely to attract. Gumtree and Facebook market place being at one end of the spectrum, autotrader at the other with ebay somewhere in the middle. That said, if WBAC has offered £900, with that mileage, I am guessing it is maybe a £1,500 car private, so you have to ask yourself how much hassle do you want for £500. That said, throw it on the free to advertise sites and you can always give it to WBAC after a week if it gets too much.

This, people don't read the adverts and just assume they are getting a brand new car in as new condition. Once they have bought it they will then get their "mechanic" to look at it, tell them it needs £1500 of work and send you a text saying "what are you going to do about it?"

The mondeo isnt worth doing anything with but i'd say its too good to scrap. Give it a good wash and then take lots of pics and list on ebay as 99p start and no reserve. My bet is it will go to an eastern european and either sent to Poland to be broken into parts or just repaired and used for deliveroo.

The 2008 will make a decent car for someone, its in good nick and well looked after so i think you could push for a bit more than what has been suggested. if it was nearer to the new year i'd possibly be even interested in it.

I'm in a similar position with our shedly E53 X5 3.0i

Its failed the MOT with a 'dangerous' tyre cut on the inside edge of the wheel but works fine. Would need a fair amount of work though to get through MOT.

WBAC have quoted a surprising amount for it, just over double what a local "We'll collect your car for cash" bloke offered. I've disclosed the MOT failure etc... how likely are WBAC to honour the quote? Obviously I need to get it to their depot somehow and I don't want to pay for a transporter only to end up worse off overall. Not talking vast fortunes, but all the same...

Useful thread. Based on this think I’ll stick my 2011, 100k Astra on EBay next year, before trying Autotrader.

eBay for the Mondeo and Pug. Auction would be best. Put key words in the title like "project" etc and descibe honestly in the description.

For more specialist older cars, i.e. something sporty in great condition i'd find a specialist retailer. Yes they take commission but you also benefit from their expertise, brand, perhaps they offer finance vs joe public putting faith in you as an unknown entity on a private sale.

Thanks all for the helpful replies.

I'm hoping the car on Saturday will be as good as it looks.

Then it depends on time, if I need to get shot of everything quickly, then i'll scrap the Mondeo for 300, (they seem to collect really quick!) and offer the Peugeot on Ebay for 99p start. It cleans up well, and has loads of history and work done in the last 12 months, all itemised, just stuck new tyres and stuff on it too ffs.

If I have a bit of time, i'll also start the Mondeo off at 99p as I must admit I love it, would like to see someone replace the injector and rear springs and take it on another 250k miles driving

335d Sport Touring i'm hoping to pick up looks good. Give it 12 months with me and i'll turn it into a high miler.

If you're prepared to be patient on the Pug you might get decentish money for it. I helped a relative buy a £3k car recently and there really are slim pickings out there these days. Your's sounds quite tidy and I'm sure someone would pay a sensible sum for it.
