My friend is looking at getting a new (to him) car. He has narrowed it down to an Audi R8 (gen 1) or a Jaguar F Type V8 AWD. I have the latter so I am a bit biased (chose because of the more modern interior and exhaust note), what one would people recommend and why?

Get the R8 then you can both drive each others.

Think a lot would come down to the gearbox preference.

F Type obviously has the ubiquitous ZF8 auto.

R8 had the lovely looking open gate manual, but if you wanted a two pedal setup the pre facelift cars were a single clutch automated manual. It wasn’t until the facelift that they got the seemingly much improved 7 speed Dual Clutch box.

R8 is just a big TT, it doesn’t feel special inside. F Type has the better engine and gearbox and sounds nicer.

I would probably go F Type.

R8 is a hand built mid engined sportscar, get the open gate manual and I can’t see it losing much money.

It has a dry sump V8 that revs to 8500 rpm, and a glass cover over the engine bay.

The only issue is that the R8 is an older car now and I understand some bits are getting hard to source. It will cost more to maintain than the Jaguar, but that needs to be viewed in the context of the relative depreciation.

Unless it's a manual R8, I'd go with the F Type.

R8 seems a special car to me, the Jaguar is just a nice Jag to me, I would go R8.
