Long Story - Short version:

Bought car in may from main Volvo dealer local to me.

The day after buying it the alternator belt snapped – which was repaired by the dealer. At the time I complained of a noise from the rear suspension, and a fault on the dashboard stating “transmission service required.” When I collected the car I was told you they greased all the moving parts and resolved the squeak, no mention was made of the transmission error.

I brought the car back to the dealer 2 weeks later as the noise from the rear suspension was still there – at which point they diagnosed rear trailing arm bushes – I paid for these to be replaced.

I then was getting further faults - which were all Symptoms of a faulty battery. Initially they were unwilling to consider a replacement but after an email conversation with the boss, they replaced the battery at no cost to myself. When driving away from the garage after the new battery was fitted, within 2 miles I had further faults – “ABS Sensor Failure” “City Safety Service required” to which they told me weren’t related. I fixed these locally at full cost to myself.

am still getting “Transmission service required” and a check engine light. When I read these codes myself get error code P0741 “Torque Converter Clutch Performance Stuck Off” My local garage gets the same reading, as did you yesterday when I brought the car for diagnostics, however you didn’t recognize any torque converter fault and insist that an Auto Gearbox oil change will fix it. (I have had long conversations with a local Volvo Specialist – who tells me this will not ix the issue as it is not the fault that is registering)

After further emails back and forth the garage have replaced the torque converter and the auto gearbox oil - no improvement. Still getting the same warnings on the dash

As we have established the fault was present prior to me buying the vehicle, and I have been advised by Volvo not to drive it, I have been without the car since 6th August now (have bought a replacement!) The garage want the car back to have another look at it, I understand that legally they have to be given one chance to repair, if this is unsuccessful then i am within my rights to request a buy back less mileage - which is where I am now.

Any advice where to go from here to ensure this happens?

Let them have a go at fixing it.
If they aren't successful hand the car back requesting a full refund minus an agreed amount for the miles it has done since ownership.

I had an old XC90 that I ran about country lanes as a shed for a while. It had that 'Transmission service' warning and I thought it just needed an oil change or something. Turns out it was a generic message for any fault with the gearbox and mine was shagged. Luckily I had only paid £2k for it 2 years earlier so was happy to drive it till it borked and scrapped it.

I'd be getting rid asap if I was you - know your rights and get them to take it back.

Curious why the dealer is off the hook so much and your paying out of your own pocket.

If bushes were knacked two weeks after pick up surely that was on them as well - is this a full volvo warrantied car as within the 1st 30 days you could of returned it hassle free.

So if the faults are carried on from there I would be arguing it was never fit for purpose - so I suppose I dont really understand why so much has been spent by you on it.

Geartronic?

Has it been 'clonking' when you shift between P and D or R? (It's quite noticeable and a common problem in these gearboxes if they haven't received a flush at some point)
