Ideally looking for something that is:

Fun & playful once you reach fun roads
Not a pain to drive long distances
Ideally DCT / fast autobox with paddles
4 door
Petrol
Ideally £10k but up to £15k cash. If its quite a new car that I could easily finance maybe as much as £20k?

Cars I've enjoyed a lot:

Megane 250
Megane 197/200
Porsche 991 C4S
F10 M5
E92 M3
F87 M2
F82 M4

Not sure if this is enough informtion to go on! Hoping someone will remind me of something obscure I've not already thought of!

Rather than a list of unobtainable cars that you have enjoyed it would be more helpful to list the cars you are considering?

Alfa Giulia?

Some nice petrol 2.0T models getting into your budget and they're all autos.

Alfa Giulia Veloce would fit the bill perfectly

Giulia is a good option, but a bit tight inside IMO.

Jaguar XE / XF With the P250 / P300? On the softer side, but still surprisingly enjoyable when presented with the opportunity. ZF8 Isn't the fastest in the world, but never enough to complain about.

A Maserati Ghibli is a bit leftfield but the V6 engine is a wonderful thing especially in 400 bhp V6S guise. They are a lovely design too IMO (much nicer than the bloated QP6)

The Giulia is too tight on the inside so he should get a Jag XE?!

They are both the same size and the Alfa is cool where as a Jag isn't IMO.

A bit tight inside for what? There is nothing in the OP that says it needs to be huge in the back and the OP listed a 911!

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Regarding the 4 doors, it is for baby duty. I'm a new father and while we usually transport my son in the wife's car it would be handy for me to be able to easily carry him in my car too. So doesn't have to be a huge rear, the only passengers will be my son in his baby seat from time to time.

I'm looking to test drive:
VW Golf GTI / R
Seat Cupra 280/290
Alfa Romero Giulia
Alfa Romeo Giulietta

The VAG platform might be too boring compared to the previous cars I've had? Not had the chance to sit in one yet. The Alfa's were not really on the map so great suggestions, never owned an Alfa.

On the higher end of the budget Renault Megane 300 EDC, Audi RS3/4, Mercedes A35/45, are all tempting at around £20k but would be best to try and stick within the £10-15k range!

I'd forget the Guiletta, but the Guilia 280 should definitely be a contender.

I notice you like fast beemers. I hired a few BMW's about 6-8 yrs ago, the 6 pot diesels I thought were great, amazing engines. I drove a 335d for 1,100 miles and averaged over 42 mpg. Power over 300hp, and the torque they deliver is immense, over 600nm..... I never got tired of putting my foot down. Badged as a 335/ 535 but in the 6 series its 640. The 6 seres arent much of a premium to the 3 and 5.

Personally I think a 335d is an M3 for the real world.

A Golf GTI Clubsport Ed40 should be within reach though maybe closer to £20k. The Mk7/7.5 platform is widely regarded as one of the best, and the Clubsport gives you some goodies that make it feel a bit more special than a standard GTI.

I'd be adding the Jaguar XE S to that list, they're good steer & the V6 is a peach:

Giulia's are a good car the Veloce is the one to have:

As could the 508 GT:

Volvo the V40 T5 may tick a lot of boxes although it's not the sharpest steer:
