I'm about to be made redundant and have a job to go to, so I'm considering options for what I might do with the payoff. Obviously there is all the sensible choices, but let's just say I want to buy a car and enjoy it for anything from a week to a few weeks. I'd put it up for sale almost straight away. It doesn't really matter if it does take longer to sell, or if I lose a bit on it. What to buy?

An A110 is high up the list, or maybe a Cayman?

What would the PH masses opt for given the same situation? Would love to hear ideas.

Surely a short term rental would be better? Buying a car for a week just seems like a waste of money (road tax, insurance etc will all be for one month minimum)

Nah, would trigger the next buyer to wonder whats up with it and you will likely take a bath on the purchase price if you buy from a dealer.

Rental is a good shout, at least its a known cost as you could easily lose ten grand, the buying bit is very, very easy when holding cash, as cash is universal , has a known value and everyone wants it, not everyone wants a specific car, the value is variable and selling can be hard.

problem with any car like that will be... it'll take quite a long time to sell, unless you buy something for £40k, then immediately sell it on at a £5k loss. Also any prospective buyer will wonder why you're selling it again so soon after buying.

but that aside... what do you want to do with the car for a week? we thinking european touring, or a sportscar to thrash around some local roads? plenty of options for that price point.

if your initial thoughts are alpine or cayman, i'd consider an R8, should get a perfectly tidy V8 for £40, might even get a v10 for £50k.

Trouble selling it is a good point which I hadn't considered.

idea

Join a car club that has access to sports cars and supercars. Tool around in all sorts of cool stuff during the week. Weekends use up a lot more 'credit' when I was looking years ago.

The only ones I could find only stocked high end supercars with massive cost per rental. Any suggestions?

Fly to Dubrovnik, rent a sports car from Sixt and enjoy the coast roads along the Adriatic for two weeks.

Buy a cheapish (sub £25,000) classic and put a few thousand miles on a cracking road trip. Buyers aren't too put off by short term ownership. Plenty of cars will keep up with modern traffic and provide a bit of fun as well.

Look at what We Buy Any Car offers as a price for a few sports cars. There might be a model (e.g. low mileage PDK Cayman) where they offer a decent amount so that if you buy one privately, the loss on selling to WBAC won't be huge.

Boxster for £225 per day.

See what they quote for 2 or 3 weeks and the day rate might be a lot lower.

That's a good shout.

Failing that I'd go on a Palmersport full day

I'd personally trouser the redundancy money, start the new job and then start thinking about blowing cash once the probationary period is over and you're happy in the new role.

Boring answer but the right one wink

Four months in Premium Bonds and see what the Oct. 30 Budget does to car prices?

As mentioned above, it would be red flag to lots of people wondering why, on a significant purchase, it was straight up for sale again.

I’d also do the ‘sensible’ thing, stick the cash away in something tax free, like premium bonds, use some to have a really nice holiday with a good rental, Route 66 with a V8 convertible ?, then see if the new job lives up to expectations.

Are you happy buying and selling privately?

If you are using dealers to buy and then sell, that two lots of their fees you will end up paying.
