I'm looking to buy another car and, like most of us I guess, I keep bouncing between very different solutions - maybe the ph mind can give me inspiration....

We've got an electric mini for my wife's commute and as a local runabout. Great car, happy with that, don't really want two electric cars though.

The other car will do limited annual mileage, 7k I imagine, so maximum fuel economy isn't all that important.

Bullet points are:

Will be financed, but £15k or maybe a little more is doable.

Ideally I'd like awd and auto.

Not so big the wife won't drive it - she's more than capable, but the boat like turning circle of a previous volvo estate put her off bigger cars.

I like the idea of suv or estate cars, just for that time you need to carry big things - I may also get back to mountain biking in the future so carrying a bike or two would be handy.

I fancied a bmw x1, test drove one, was underwhelmed.

Other end of the scale, and not awd, corolla hybrid estate is kinda tempting. Should be boringly reliable, but it's a bit white goods maybe.

I reckon that's vague enough, what do we think?

Golf R - nope, nice car but don't want the theft risk.

Lexus - maybe

Rav4 - can't get over how it looks from the rear.

Countryman - maybe, but I reckon it's not that big inside.

3 Series touring - good shout

Leon Cupra 300 or 290 estate with 4WD will be possible with a little budget creep, having said that I have a 2019 hatch version and they put the power down very well through.

Alfa Giulia Veloce? RWD but again they put the power down well, not quite as quick as the above but I think they look fantastic and a generally nice interior.

Skoda Superb 280 is 4WD

Just had a search for the Leon cupra and there's one not far from me in budget, thanks for the tip.

Are these just a golf R, and if so, are they as much of a target for car thieves?

If the car gets nicked, so be it, I just don't need the drama of facing up to burglars, dominating the stairs ain't my thing...

Any particular reason for wanting AWD? You would have a lot more choice without it.

Not really, I just like to be prepared for that one day every five years when it would be useful biggrin

I realise that losing awd and/or auto makes things easier, less complex and cheaper to run but hey, we're not really all about logic when it comes to cars, right?

It's 90% golf R with same engine, chassis, switchgear, digital dash etc, you get more kit as standard but you have less sound deadening and the standard seats aren't as sporty IMO but still comfortable while offering enough support on the twisties. The main difference is the golf has a better upgraded sound system (standard is the same) and some slightly better materials in the lower part of the cabin.

Golf will always be a higher theft risk just because it's a Golf, the Cupra isn't risk free they just go under the radar more and there is less demand for stolen parts.

Just don't get the lux pack which is keyless

Oh yeah I get that, worth having a look at 2 wheel drive options.

The Panamera is a very good option & one that's overlooked.
