Looking to upgrade our Tesla Model 3 to a seven seater. We have another electric car and charging/solar panels - so ideally looking for electric or hybrid (lots of shool runs, short trips etc.). Budget is an absolute max of £30k.

Requirements:

7 seats
Electric or Hybrid
Reliable (!)

Things I have considered so far include a Tesla MX (would have to be 2017 or 2018), Mercedes EQB and a Volvo XC90 Hybrid (although not sure about the range and would it mean charging it every day?!).

Also not sure about how much more EV prices will drop etc. but I suppose that should be taken into consideration.

Would welcome any thoughts!

The Kia EV9 can be had with 7 seats I think, although you would probably be into PCP or leasing at this point as they have only just come out.

Brand new top spec Dacia Jogger HEV? up to 7 years warranty (if serviced by a Dacia dealer each year).

Good option - although I may struggle to convince the main driver on this!

Buy the car not the power train.

Modern Hybrid and EV are both good.

I've run one of these for the last 18 months and it's been a great family car. Very comfortable and spacious, all the toys you could want, averaged 38mpg over 12k miles with mostly town driving (42mpg on the motorway). My only criticism is the gearbox which is a bit slow to respond at times, and the intrusive 'safety' systems but that's typical of all new cars.

Edit - mine is the self charging hybrid version, not the PHEV.

If you want big, premium and a badge maybe a 3yr old lexus RXL.

New I think the Nissan Xtrail maybe worth a look. Well under 30k for a new one. They are a good looking SUV imo.

An XC90 for that budget might only get you the older generation PHEV: smaller battery so smaller range; much lower power EV motor; supercharged petrol engine so much lower economy when running on petrol.

You can pick up MXs for below £30k, ours just passed its 7 year MOT with no issues, still on the original brake pads/discs after 82k miles!!!

The reliability bit should be OK now. We had loads of issues with ours new due to Tesla now building them properly out of the factory but for the last 2-3 years it's been OK. It's no Lexus but for a 6/7 seater family wagon handles as well as you can expect and even our base spec 75D will get to over the national speed limit far too quickly!!

Compared to some of the cars listed here the MX is an absolute bargain and wouldn't numb your brain from bordem, unlike my wife's Lexus, which really is 2nd most boring car I've driven, but it is reliable.

At some point we'll need to replace ours, but the plan is to keep it till it falls apart, which touch wood seems like it might make it to 10 years old under our ownership.

This is what I keep coming back to! Despite the various options available (and as many people above has suggested) - I keep coming back to the MX!

I know there is lots of hate for Tesla and EVs around, but when you are considering a MX versus S Max, which incidentally will cost more to run, you have to really really love the S Max to pick it over a MX.

We've taken our 6 seater fully loaded all over Europe. Skyfall road, Trollstegen/Atlantic Highway and Stelvio stand out the most. But school runs, tip runs, general family duties is what the MX has done for most of its 84k miles and it does all those jobs amazingly well.

If I had the time off work and no responsibilities I'll happily jump in it and head off towards anywhere in Europe/Scotland/Wales tonight smile.

Drove the new one last weekend having looked at that model a few months ago. The new one is really good, the previous version had a lot of buttons on the dash but was also really good. New one is the same underpinnings, just with a Defender-esq body and a very modern interior.
