My week is spent mostly driving a citroen dispatch so I'm on the look out for something nice for my spare time.

I keep coming back to X100 Xkr's, have seen 03/04 plates at this money so it avoids any of the cylinder liner issues. Have also seen the next shape creep in at the higher end too.

Would love a V8, have also seen Audi S5's, clk55's and jag XFR's around my budget.... Or am I just asking for trobluble with any of these at that price point?

Get a decent Boxster for that kind of money and it’ll be most fun you can have with that budget

'trobuble' laugh

8k will get you a 7 style kit car and there is little else that will compare on road or track for pure unfiltered driving fun.

Funnily enough, I have been filtering through the 986's on autotrader too.

For the budget, and wanting a V8, I think the Jag is difficult to beat. They can be very economical as many have Flintstone style holes in the footwells so you can use peddle power. The underside is mostly XJS, dating back to E Type to a degree, and does like to rust.

IMO the Jag is a bit more special than the S5. The Maserati 4200 would cost more to run and the Cambiocorsa 'box, that most have, is a bit marmite.

If you want a sports car, I get the appeal of a Boxster and I enjoyed mine immensely. It's just that at your budget you could face some expensive maintenance bills. Maybe look for one with a few miles on it that has had many items replaced in recent years.

Lots of cheap V8 Mercedes available in various guises. Keep half the budget for repairs and you can end up with one in top fettle. New tyres, wheel refurb, servicing, misc repairs.

That's my train of thought, I'm Somerset based aswell and have had previous dealing with Swallows jaguar in terms of maintaining one of my other previous cars.

There is currently a blue one on auto trader that's in budget that's also had the doorbells done.

With the same budget and wanting a V8 I went for an 07 jag Xk it’s the earlier 4.2 but goes well and with an Xkr back box sounds great!

CLK 500 with the 5.5 V8 wihich actually puts out a few more horses than the AMG one:

I'm very bias but the CLK55 AMG would get the nod over (coupe) everything else:

I will admit the 4.2 XK is a hard car to look past:
