I live in deepest Somerset.
narrow hedge lined B roads
pothole'd A roads
Only one motorways, but I do do the odd longer trip.
For most of the year the local roads are mostly covered in mud and/or cow waste.
frequent flooding
odd bits of snow

We have one 9yr old child, no pets yet...and we like getting out, off the beaten track for walks

I have had a Grand Vitara for the past 5-6 years and it's dealt with all of the above with aplomb. A cockroach of a car that I keep maintained but dont properly have to 'care' about.

Now I want to upgrade to have something I care about and include some comfort, luxury, tech and build quality whilst retaining the do-it-all stuff.

Budget - not more than £27k. This number includes man/budget creep.

Current faves - in order:
2017/18 Jeep Grand Cherokee
2018 Volvo XC60 Inscription
2015/16 X5 40e
2017/18 Lexus NX Premium

any owners out there care to share?
thoughts opinions welcome on better alternatives...

The Jeep stands out to me, they have that rugged vibe about them, the rest you would possibly worry about dings and scratches, the current shape GC is also a good looking thing and comes well equipped.

You can get a lot of L405 Range Rover for your budget. Here's a non drug dealer looking 4.4 SD V8 for £24k. It's a 2018.

I also live in darkest Somerset, and I feel your pain.

I've always been a fan of the RAV4, (had three to far, including one at present), so that might be a consideration

Something like this perhaps:

How about a VW Tourareg?
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202409053...

Or a Cayenne with the wonderful V8 diesel
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202407111...

Not sure on the size, but there is the Porsche Macan
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202408213...

Edit, just re read the brief, maybe too wide.

Definately not a RR, huge and commonly unreliable, did you even read the requirements??

Narrow roads and you shortlist wide vehicles.... obviously not that narrow then.

After 3 & a bit years in a 2020 RAV4 Hybrid AWD, that’s where my money would go.

Drives nice, quick enough, loads of room, economical, plenty of tech / safety kit & 10 year warranty as long as you get it serviced by Toyota.

Another vote for the RAV4 from me, seems to tick all the requirements

Discovery Sport is about the same size as the XC60, has a premium feel but still quite rugged and being a Land Rover can obviously can go off-roading without any bother. I have Cross Climate tyres on mine and driving on snow/ice is a non-event.

edit - just seen you post about being narrow, the Disco Sport isn't hehe

Thanks all for the comments.

If anyone can suggest a narrow vehicle that fulfills the rest of the brief I'm all ears wink

RAV added to the daily AT trawl.

I'll add I'm a fan of a big glass roof and a light interior trim colour.....

Another Rav 4 vote. My wife has one as a company car and it's been completely reliable, feels very solid, nice enough to drive, spacious without being too large on the road, quick (in PHEV form at least) and good on fuel. Hers gets used and abused - Scottish weather / rural roads, visiting construction sites, carrying the children and dog. It just does everything well with zero fuss.

Or if you want to keep in the Suzuki family, how about the Across, it's a RAV in drag, but better value.

A bit left field but maybe a Subaru forester or outback?

They generally cope with everything and anything thrown at it.

Suzuki Across doesn't appear to 'do' a big glass roof
I don't want another Porsche
Not a fan of the Scooby aesthetic
Q5..... yeah that can be added....
Much as I love the idea of a JLR product, I'm totally infected by the fear(reliability) factor....
