The requirement, seriously comfy seats, really good MPG, to transport (don't ask) up to 15 boxes of A4 5* reams, you know, these things
On minimum 5 HR, maximum 8 HR journeys, two or three times a week, with 2 or 3 people too.
No, me neither, secure couriering apparently, boyo can't use a van (must be a car, also a requirement), and can't be over 5M long, or whatever the specific is it's less, but it rules out E class/ 5 series etc unfortunately, and even a Model S.
my go to would usually have been a 3 series estate, although the post 2020 (?) is hard to find at that money and the spec is crap, so seats will probably be cheaped out nasty ones. V60 perhaps given seat requirements but apparently the head rest leans forward too much for anyone to get comfy. Skoda (and most VW group) stuff ruked out for the difficulty of finding something with really good seats.
Is there a decent C class estate? Audi seats apparently "nice", no idea if an A4 estate would work or maybe even an A5 sport back, again the facelift (2020?) might be out of reach with a reasonable spec/ engine.
What has really good seats, think really decent lumbar, at least the possibility of heated, and plenty of adjustment, will do 50+ mpg to avoid too many fuel stops, and is big without being too big!

Comfort is highly subjective, but I'd suggest 3 series SE,
Loads of cars can have range for 8 hours, I did Southampton to Scotland several times in a '98 Mondeo Ghia 2litre petrol.
If range is more important than economy ,there are some cars out there with big tanks.
An X3 or X5 maybe?
I think back in the last century, the european parliament had some stretched citroens or something for ferry documents?

Saab 93 or 95 estate
TBF I did post on a Friday night...The Civic tourer is not a bad shout, the Volvo's as per the OP are all out thanks to those stupid headrests.
Despite VW having been ruled out, it turns out the Arteon might be within size and, with the right model, have electric seats that might work. Hopefully one being seen today...

It's what's available. They will need to tavel through London and Paris etc, which in a Euro 5 diesel (if that's what the last of them were?) adds an additional cost on something that's already going to be quite old, and probably leggy.
I am not interested in debating how fabulous and reliable saabs I am sure still are, and that I'm also sure you can drop 16+k on one, that would not likely suit this one I'm afraid.

Ah, I thought it was over 5m, good shout.
This is what appeals in the Arteon, the optioned (???) ergo comfort seats. You can tell because it says so
Apparently there are some with a massage function, which has a separate button to the side of this, but that's super rare
Does the Superb have a similar option??
This does look a bit weird mind, the backrest is simply manual pivoted, so you get a cheap handle to change your angle, then you have, basically, electric lumbar. But if it will do, it will do!
ETA here are the upgraded, upgraded ones (or maybe there was a facelift), massage, memory and electric back rest. Surely this is just VW group parts bin so they must be available on a Superb??

I can personally recommend the Mondeo in Vignale spec, it's a great place to be & the ride is good too:On minimum 5 HR, maximum 8 HR journeys, two or three times a week, with 2 or 3 people too.

A more modern & very capable car is the 508:

The engine may be too small for the weight but the Kia Optima may be okay:

Also the last of the line Insignia has good seats:

Can't comment on the Skoda seats. I've had two Octavia's but they were vRS trim so sports type seats. Laurin Klement(?) Is the top of the range luxury trim so I'd expect they'd have something along those lines. This is what appeals in the Arteon, the optioned (???) ergo comfort seats. You can tell because it says so

I'm currently on my 3rd Volvo. I can say the seats are superb. A 2017 V90 cross country I had was fully kitted out but in later models a lot of the standard kit seemed to become optional. The CC had heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise but when replacing it with an XC60 all that minus the heated seats was an optional extra.
Ooh those Peugeot seats look super comfy! Top list as ever ZX, thank you!
Here's the L&K Superb. Yep parts bin jobs. No surprise!
Appreciate VW from this era was "peak lying", but I think they'll now rule one of those (Superb or Arteon) properly in or out, despite initial impressions!
Then defo a Pug, wonder of that's one of those fixed steering wheels, but seriously how good do those seats look.
Made me go on a mad French adventure, hello depreciation! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2024062009...

Closing out, would you believe a Merc CLS estate is sub 5m?
2017 so euro 6, 2.1td so not the arguably nicer 3ltr, but well known chain driven unit. Got to be honest I think the interior looks... Aged, the dash especially, and when compared to some of the far newer cars suggested here, but they hold their value relative to other brands so even when it's kicked up a lot of miles it may still have made a good case for itself.

Golf estate has a larger boot than an A4 estate. Mk7 very good to live with.
Doubt the seats would have been up to much compared to the bigger boys in the VW group. They did like the Arteon, from the outside, and were going to hunt down an A5 sportback (there's a Matt Watson review pitting the two together pointing out the superior interior on the Audi, where they'll spend most of the time), but then a CLS was at the same place as a Superb they looked at, and whatever seat option it has the said was amazing.
So job jobbed!
£20k? Volvo v60 every day of the week. Very comfortable especially the seats
