Jeep Wrangler TK
Discussion
I've just got back from a couple of weeks in Ibiza.
My son insisted we hired a Jeep Wrangler, i thought why not for a bit of fun. It was a 2.5 diesel, 3 door, 6 speed manual. TK.
I've got to say i thoroughly enjoyed it, thought it was a hoot, although parking with the big bumper took a bit of getting used to and the manual gearbox was awful.
I'm a bit concerned i may have rose tinted glasses, but seeing i only do 1500 miles a year max and we have other cars (family, classic and track), i was thinking of buying one for a bit of fun. Might even do a bit of green laning. 4.0 though probably.
Anyone got any experiences of ownership, and anything to look out for.

Haha you know when you buy a bottle of limoncello, ouzo or local red wine because it’s fabulous then bring it home it tastes like someone has drunk it before you? My son insisted we hired a Jeep Wrangler, i thought why not for a bit of fun. It was a 2.5 diesel, 3 door, 6 speed manual. TK.

I can see this being the car equivalent
I had a Jeep TJ for 3 years. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?host...
No idea how anyone could own one as their only car or their practical car but honestly, I loved mine. As a 3rd car that you only use when you can be bothered it was great. The 4 litre engine is the one to go for although it really just converts petrol into noise with not-a-lot of speed, but it does have loads of character. 15 mpg whether thrashing it (to get up to 60mph) or at idle.
Insurance was really cheap, my local garage serviced it and said it was very basic. Even writing this brings back happy memories of it. I'm not up on Jeep stuff enough to know the big differences between the various models but for cheap-as-chips fun it was ace. The dealer I bought it from contacted me and asked if I wanted to sell it back to him for what I paid. I wish I'd kept it tho.

Try imagining the realty....cold, dull and pissing down, potholed, congested roads full of idiots and dawdlers.
You're sat high up in a cumbersome, clunky, lump, windows misting up, a draught coming from somewhere and you're in a traffic jam.
Not exactly living the dream is it.
Best left as a fond holiday memory.

That’s a JK. I ran a JKU (4 door version) for a few years as a daily driver - it was reliable and fine to drive. It’s no better or worse than similar trucks so as long as you know it’s a bit agricultural you won’t be bothered by it. Hard top leaked a bit on mine but the soft top didn’t strangely. Kids absolutely loved it in the summer and we did multiple trips across Europe in it with no issues. I like them because they’re different - modern cars in general are becoming so bland.
There’s no UK RHD petrol version. If you want a petrol it will need to be an import and the JK didn’t come with the 4L straight six. Road manners pre JK are noticeably worse.

There's something special about a Wrangler, it's like the off road equivalent of a MX5, purpose built for fun.
I miss my TJ a lot. It was incredibly capable once I had done a few modifications, but the climbing values meant I was less comfortable about breaking stuff while off road.
For a lot less money you could probably get a similar soft-top off road fun experience with 1st or 2nd generation Suzuki Vitara. So they're worth a look too.

I daily drove a 2 door 2.0 Wrangler JL sahara for 2 years (on lease and didn't want to hand it back)
got to say it was some of the best 2 years of motoring I've had although I am aware they added plenty of modern creature comforts to it to appeal more to modern day drivers.
only issue I had was the Coolant Pump went kaboom but then again the engine is from Alfa Romeo so it is to be expected 😬😬😬
looking at 2nd hand though and they don't seem to have depreciated much from factory so unfortunately they are a bit expensive for a toy to drive around
