VW Golf TDi MK 7.5 - Anything to look out for?
Discussion
Hi all,
Looking at getting a new car for mixed duties.
Originally had considered an Infiniti Q30 as we had one previously and it was good, but for a nice low mileage one we were looking at 11-12k from a non franchised dealer.
VW Approved offer a 2 year warranty ( which is a big plus for the risk averse other half) so we are looking at a Mk 7.5 golf.
It's a 2.0 tdi DSG.
I've had the engine before in an Audi A3 and it was decent, but that was a manual.
Anything to look out for? Are the gearboxes troublesome in these?
Just a reality check really as we like the car but want to check we are not missing something glaringly obvious before buying!

I ran a mk 7 GTD from new and did nearly 90k miles in 3 years.
From memory, I had the brake autohold stick on intermittently, misting dampers were spotted in a service after about 1 year, had some suspension creaks ,(suspension bushes I believe) the rear tyres were very sensitive to alignment , and wore unevenly ,the adaptive cruise control packed up a few times, and the infotainment screen would randomly switch off.
Mine was a manual but I believe the DSG can be problematic .
I didn’t have the issue but I believe boot leaks are quite common as they get older.
Mainly little niggles then but the main mechanicals were fine and it never actually let me down.
Probably worth asking this in the Audi, VW, Seat forum further down.
I have since owned Mini and Mazda and found them to be much better with regards to warranty issues and willingness to get issues fixed .
Always felt with VW it was a bit of a fight to get things fixed .
Other than that my GTD was one of the best cars I have owned .

I had a mk7 gti with the 2 year approved used warranty. And as above always found it a bit of a fight getting warranty work approved. Mine had a fuel leak on the port injection rail. It took a few visits before they would acknowledge an issue. Once they did they had it weeks as they would fit one part and it would still leak and getting approval from VW seemed to take an age.
It wouldn’t put me off having another, and I’d still rather have the approved used warranty. It just can be a pain if you do have an issue.
I've been looking around the last couple of months for a £12k Golf, there's a lot of rubbish out there.
Really wanted the 1.6Diesel but just couldn't find one that had been looked after. They will typically have mot fails in the history, odd tyres, dirty and worn interiors, missed cam belt/pump/etc change, scratches and dents. So I gave up on the diesel angle and bought a 2018 1.5 petrol se golf from an indie vw dealer. 6speed manual (don't want the DSG), 50mpg, quiet and 130bhp
The other thing I found is anything with low tax tended to be a lot more money compared to a newer car. You might save say £700 in tax over 4yrs but your running a 2-3yr older car with its associated issues...plus the tech is older. I think if you go diesel its worth having euro6, anything earlier and it could well be a pain........for instance driving to Hearthrow now will cost you a ULEZ charge if its not euro6 diesel.
You may have better luck with a GTD owned by an enthusiast, for me that's too high an insurance group for the kids to drive.

I ran a GTD. 7.5 for a couple of years with no warranty and DSG, got a lot of hard use with my son mostly, not a single issue with it, other than tyres wore quickly, not a single mechanical issue, a pleasure to own, the MK8 Gti that replaced it was not.
It did around 40k in the time we had it.

I had the 1.5/150/DSG in a 7.5 - should be fine for normal driving. Just leave it in D and it will disengage the gearbox when going downhill so less wear.
There's no fluid to change in the gearbox so it won't last as long as the stronger boxes in the GTI/GTD/etc that have fluid changes every 40k miles but it's in many different models without many issues.
