What car to buy for under £5/6k

Hi All, I need help deciding on my next car. I've finally got rid of my nightmare DS3 and have £5k to spend, but could stretch to £6k max. Looking for something that's going to be more reliable (have decided no more french cars for the time being), tax to be no more than £210 and don't want anything older than 2010. Also, nothing too slow. Ideally petrol as mostly town journeys with one long journey a week. Appreciate this limits my options though so happy to look at diesels too as long as they're reliable. Please help, I've been looking for ages and still none the wiser! Everything seems to be really old and high mileage.

Depends on what you classify as slow I guess...
You might be able to find a decent 2015 Mini Cooper which has a 1.5 Turbo engine. Same engine that's in a 1 series. Sub 8 seconds to 60, can come in 3 or 5 door depending on what you're wanting and £20 a year road tax. I recently bought one as my daily to get back and forth to work. For my commute it's enough turn of speed and I get 45mpg easily enough.
If you were going that route, avoid anything pre 2014/15, as they'd likely be using the same / similar engines as your DS3.
