Hi new member Here .. I bought a used car off a private seller,as i needed one to drive my mother around because she has COPD so I needed a car mainly for her..it came with 12 months MOT,with advisories but the seller said the advisory work had being done.
And shown the receipt

I and a friend went for a test drive but I couldn't drive it because I didn't' have insurance but the test drive was a just round the block one but car sounded ok,and he knocked money off of the original price..
anyway I got insured, taxed, ect ,however on driving it home it had a loud like helicopter noise and a clicking when it braked.
And the person who took me up to buy it refused to take me back to where I had bought it . so I couldn't do anything but keep it
I took it to garage the day after and it needed wheel bearings.so had to get it done , because the noise was unbearable.

Also garage said it needed shockers but said they'll be ok for now but think he felt sorry for me because the mechanic said i shouldn't have to spend money on a car I'd just bought.
I know the brakes aren't working properly either. And I've never being so disheartened at buying a car.
I feel like it's wasted money but my mother thinks it's a great car but she's not a driver and I feel so unsafe especially with how the brakes are,so I'm only using it locally..
Why wasn't the brakes, shockers and wheel bearings on the MOT?..

Sorry you are in this predicament. This is why, when buying privately, you take someone with you who is knowledgeable.

What advisories were on the MOT? If the brakes are not on the list then they were fine at the time. At least your problems are not hugely expensive and all consumables which would have needed doing at some point anyway.

You, usually, have no comeback against a private seller unless they have misrepresented the car and you have the evidence of this. It all depends on how much you want to pursue this and what what evidence you have.

Advisories..
Noisy when changing gears(but it goes into gears ok..with no noise
And a tyre
But the guy said that was done.
I haven't drove for 5 years because I couldn't afford a car, but I got a bonus at work last year and I saved it for a car.
I don't know if it's because I haven't drove in a while but the brakes do make a ticking noise.not all the time only when I slow down they tick.

It's very rare to buy a used car privately and not have to carry out some overdue maintenance, so don't be too disheartened with it just yet.

These sound like fairly minor issues with a bit of leeway in terms of when they need to be addressed.

If it hasn't had an oil & filter service sometime in the past year then it would be a good idea to book one in as well.

I've bought a 2nd hand car before. But it was in perfect condition because it had service history.

Brakes, shocks and wheel bearings are all serviceable items and will only last so long before needing replacing.

If everything else is good then just get them done and then have many years of reliable motoring. Nothing there seems stupidly expensive.

Buying privately comes with risks. It’s up to you to satisfy yourself that all is good. 24hr insurance can be had for around £20 and would have allowed you to test drive the car properly and then either negotiate a discount or walk away.

As long as the car has not been misdescribed then the seller is perfectly in his rights to tell you to foxtrot oscar. Chalk it up to experience and maybe next time buy from a dealer.
