I need to sell my son's car which is cat N, WBAC value it at £5,075, I expect to be knocked down for dents, scratches and so on.

Before I make an appointment does their value take into account the Cat N, or will be be knocked down a further 20% when we get there?

WBAC are part of British Car Auctions and my experience is they offer lower prices than others.

Have you spoken to local small garages or tried Motorway, CarWow or similar.

I suggest you are as open and honest as possible with lots of photos especially the damaged bits.

Thanks for the lovely advice, will follow that up. It is an Up with really low miles, hopefully someone wants it.

No. Unless you note the car as a Cat N - there is a section where you can add it, the quote has not factored it in. Once you do the price will fall markedly.

Have you ticked the box that allows you add the write off status If you have not told them they wont allow for it? If not they will devalue it by 80-90% on realizing its a CAT N.

£5k for an UP seems VERY high, unless it is literally a month or 2 old. We tried to get rid of a 3 year old Mondeo a couple of years back that was worth 6 or 7K on auto trader WBAC offered £700 as it had a CAT marker.

A lot of people don't seem to realise WBAC has a section on the website for adding things like Cat N and recording other marks and damage at which point they will readjust the price.

Many people seem to just get the headline quote then complain they are knocked down when they arrive there to sell. I used them once myself and I recorded all the stone chips etc on the website and they did pay me what they quoted online.

When I had ticked all the boxes it came up at £3k with WBAC, we paid £4,400 about 18 months ago. Motorway won't touch it as it is cat N, but don't tell you that until after you have spent an hour on their app taking photos. Might get an Autotrader ad for £60 which stays live until you sell. If I can't sell it I will just hang onto it until we need a second car when a leased car goes back.

Alternatively I will hang onto it and just leave it on the drive for the next 18 months when we will need it.

One thing to be mindful with WBAC and Cat N or S registered cars.

You can select cat N or S under the assumptions update tab

However, some of the vehicle checker staff will still put that it’s a cat N or S in the update valuation when they note anything not on the damage list such as scratches.

This will significantly affect the value

This is a bit naughty, the app shouldn’t allow them to penalise you twice for it being a Cat N or S.

You’ve answered your own question then, it’s not worth 20% more than you paid for it 18 months ago……..
