Hi all

I'm a bit stuck in terms of selling my wife's car for her.

It's become apparent that after a HPI check there is an insurance theft marker against it. Obviously with this no one will touch it and I think I can't even get it scrapped?

Is the only option here to contact the insurance company that added the marker and say we've got their car - come collect it?? At this point they can just take it....but how on earth do I find out which insurance company it is?

Are there any other options? Can it be scrapped with this marker on it?

She's owned the car for 3 years, so this happened before she bought it.

Thanks in advance

I would assume the police can assist. And remove the marker?

You may lose the car if it is stolen unrecoved, tho strange that youve been able to insure it .

Or its an admin error?

I've no idea. I thought it strange as I did a vcheck on it and it came back not stolen. However, carwow and motorway both confirm it's got this marker. I can only assume their checks are more in-depth.

Thanks

There was another thread about an HPI marker being against a registration number from a previous car. If you haven't changed the reg then obviously this won't apply. frown

Vcheck give a guarantee of up to £40,000 if their data is wrong. Give them a call and see what they say.

HPI data is only as good as the information input.

On the HPI report it will show if its VIN or VRM related. If its both it’s probably not a mistake.

If it’s an outstanding theft marker it will show the constabulary that added it plus a contact and reference.

If its a previous marker it will show the insurance company that paid out on the car and there contact details and reference.

As mentioned above cherished reg numbers can throw up a few errors so worth reading what the report actually says. Please feel free to post a redacted version here if you need any help.

I thought that was a really helpful reply.

I find these types of stories interesting, OP sorry that you're the one who's got the issue with your wife's car.
Have you got any further details on it? What car, year, value etc?
It would be interesting to keep this post updated and how it was resolved, otherwise is the best option to keep the car until it dies and it becomes worthless?

Good luck

Thanks all and good to know about the HPI results. The DVLA say there are no markers but there must be because 3 different companies have said so. My wife has decided to keep the car and just run it in to the ground and I'll sell my old car. It's a bizarre situation to be in, but it does look like some of the HPI checks out there don't have the same level of detail as others. Vcheck for instance says it was never stolen. If the car was worth a lot more money I'd probably keep investigating, but it's not worth at this point.

Thanks for all the responses.

That's quite a surprise after so long.

When I worked for an insurance company I bought a couple of stolen/recovered cars from them. They were absolute bargains and I never had a problem selling them, but that was back in the days when only traders had access to the HPI database!

But I don't see why it would prevent you selling it unless it hasn't been recovered yet. People still buy Cat N and Cat S cars, just don't pay as much for them.

Good luck anyway. thumbup

Indeed. Just sounds like the OP needs to sell the car privately as the trade aren't interested (as they wouldn't be for a Cat N/S/etc car).
