Looking at best options around £12-14k.

£12k is the sweet spot, but could rise up to £14k for something that would really work and be a good deal for us.

Family of 4, kids are in school now, so no need for prams etc anymore, so a hatchback is absolutely fine – Focus, Astra size etc.

Currently leasing, but want to get out when it expires in a couple of months time as the rates are just not favourable anymore, and would rather invest the circa £12k spent over the lease term into something we could keep beyond the 3 years.

I do roughly 13k miles a year including work commuting, so something low mileage and preferably 2020-21 onwards.

After some experience really, what is the best option to be looking at for some reasonably trouble free future motoring to keep the car up to 9-10 years old.

Focus St Line ones look the nicest styling wise around the higher end of the price point, but open to anything really.

Toyota Corolla hybrid. If you keep it serviced at a main dealer it'll be under warranty until it's 10 year old / hits 100k miles.

£13k gets you a 1.5 turbo Focus.
