Honda civic 1.5

Has anyone owned one ? After the 2nd 1.0 focus having engine problems I’ve admitted defeat with them ( though 1.5 diesel might of bern a better bet )
So looking elsewhere Honda always had a good reputation for reliability, I don’t want another 1.0 so 1.5 looks the answer , though doing 20 k Pa maybe diesel would be the way to go ?
So anyone owned a civic with the 1.5 engine or 1.6 diesel , any other suggestions , needs to be focus size, no 1.0 Ford or any other 1.0 , thankyou

Suits then perfectly, good on fuel (up to 50mpg) quiet yet has good performance when required. The car itself is actually quite nice and well specced in a Honda approach. Think Ford Focus as a direct rival rather than Audi A3 or Mercedes A class.

My commuter car is a 21 1.5 manual that I bought new. It’s on around 74k now and I have just changed the front pads. Front tires were changed at 40k. All tires will need changing soon. That’s the sum cost for servicing as the car came with 5 year free serving pack (which is now exhausted as serving is every 12.5K). It has been faultless, and the aircon works as well. I have had the Bluespark tuning box fitted from around 600miles. Showing 54mpg after 6700miles on the Trip, but that’s mostly fast motorway commute. The 1.5 had a chain rather than belt and and with regular oil changes feels like it will go on for ever ( YouTube has the one that did 200k in one year and still felt like new, and the near 800kmile one that now is a little rough (but still on the same turbo and clutch!). I will change the oil and filter from now on as it’s out of warranty.

Thanks again the focus had a 1 yr warranty on it when we brought it & I put a extra 2 yrs on it for £400 , so hoping garage can fix it then can get rid ( get a bit more money for it if it runs ok / has no eml on ) .
Sure we will go civic but not sure diesel would be a better bet as I do 20 k Pa , will try 1.5 & diesel .

I thought the Honda turbo 1.5 had oil dilution problems?
Honda aren’t the reliable company of old, they’ve changed a lot since the founder died in the late 80’s, especially in the last 20 years. If you want something reliable, get a Toyota.
The Honda 1.0 also has as wet belt, loads of munched engines around 45k miles.

I haven’t heard of any oil dilution issues ( lots of very short journeys in very cold weather where the engine doesn’t get warm enough) in the UK. I don’t think it get cold enough here and anyway with the mileage the OP is doing if won’t be an issue even if it is below -10 degrees outside for a long period of time.Edited by wyson on Sunday 21st July 08:30

I disagree with your view from my personal experience. Like the previous poster I have one from new, mine is on 87k miles now and couldn’t be more reliable. Very reliable car. We also have other older Hondas in my family and yes they are still going strong but this new one there’s nothing wrong with it and would probably be more reliable than any vw or ford of similar vintage.
I suppose my use is kind for the cars at its 60% motorway that may play a role. We also have some more premium German cars but I would question those in terms of reliability or running costs. I keep saying to my wife this little Honda was/is the best car I ever owned at a fraction of the price of others…
Had a 2013 1.6 civic diesel manual for 5 years up to last year which asked for nothing but servicing, boringly reliable!
Now got a 2018 civic 1.5 manual that my dad had for 3 years. Its been nothing but reliable also. Has decent performance for a none hot hatch, good fuel economy at average of 43 which is town, A road and motorway.
The civic’s are also an exceptionally good steer for what they are, leagues ahead of something like an A3, they’re full of feel, comparing to my partners 2020 Kia Ceed which is dead in terms of feel, hugely electric assisted feeling.
If i were doing big miles i’d try find 1.6 diesel manual or auto.
