A6 Estate vs V90
Discussion
Debating over which car to get next, currently driving a 2015 diesel that's cost me more than i want to think about over the years.
I'm looking at two possible vehicles, one is a Volvo V90 Hybrid Petrol engine. The other is an Audi A6 Estate Diesel Hybrid Engine. I do about 16,000 miles a year
The Audi A6 is £32,000 , 60,000 miles (MY 2019) - 40-45mpg average
The Volvo V90 is £37,000 15,000 miles (MY 2023) - 38-42mpg
Both are similarly spec in terms of options.
A6 can split the rear seats 20/20/20 where the Volvo is 60/40
A6 is diesel, Volvo is Petrol. Both have MHEV 48v Motors which whilst they don't run the wheels, do aid the engine.
Both touchscreen for everything including climate, volvo even has touch for the sunroof (don't see the need when a button would have fit just fine!), both 360 cameras, premium audio, heads up display.
A6 can park itself, V90 can't (Don't think i'd use it anyway)
A6 uses android auto, V90 is "Android as an Operating System" so has moved away from Sensus.
Does the V90 make more sense being the newer car with reasonable MPG even though it's a petrol? I feel like it would be worth more in a few years too? Or would the A6 be the better car?

I think the Volvo is nicer, there was a 22 plate D4 mild hybrid with about 25k miles go through BCA this morning with an estimated price of £22k.
The pre 69 plate Volvo's all have autonomous, after that / during covid some momentum models didnt get it - worth checking as its superb.
We did 40k in ours and it was faultless, still miss it.
I've had both.
2019 A6 avant sport and a 2020 V90 T4 momentum plus.
A6 had a cheaper feeling cabin. Still a nice place to be, but it was quite clear the Volvo had much nicer materials. Never quite got on with the seats in the A6, felt like they'd put too much padding in the wrong places. I think mine was 250bhp vs 190bhp in the Volvo, so it did feel quicker.
The Volvo equipment was leagues ahead of the Audi; pilot assist, adaptive cruise, electric memory seats and little touches that I preferred like split boot loading for shopping etc. Obviously equipment is car dependent though.
I didn't take my A6 on enough motorway journeys to stretch its legs, but recently my V90 T4 managed 46.5mpg from Glasgow to Stoke on Trent, fully loaded with luggage and 4 people sitting at 70 the entire way, which I was thoroughly impressed with. Around town it's about 31-32mpg.
I don't think 16,000 miles a year is enough to go for diesel. Between the two examples you've listed, I'd go V90.

Both are good options BUT I'd be going for the E400d they're really a great drivetrain & you'll get a Premium Plus one for less money than the A6 but with lower miles:I'm looking at two possible vehicles, one is a Volvo V90 Hybrid Petrol engine. If you go for the Audi get the S6 Avant it has the next best drivetrain to the E400d above:

Go diesel for that mileage. Petrol mpg looks optimistic to me, in actual use I’d expect diesel to return 10mpg more over the petrol.
Mpg for volvo reported on various long term tests suggest 40mpg is about right? If its the same version that is? I would say generally speaking the better buy is going to be a Mercedes as they at least try to make their cars reliable. Volvo and Audi have absolutely no honour when it comes to making sure their cars will last past 100,000 miles. I know because I've done the repairs. If you want a car with failed gearbox and massive oil leaks go for a Volvo or an Audi. It is much of a muchness and all cars do go wrong but I like the attitude of Mercedes where they are at least trying to make a decent car.
I personally think the Volvo is a better car. They don't make V90 for UK anymore so that might help residuals as there are plenty of Volvo estate lovers so late examples might hold value.
You'll spend a bit more on fuel though, and the luxury car tax will need paid for a bit yet. I would still by the Volvo but I don't think overall you'll save money Vs the Audi.
One last point. There will be no new model on the Volvo, ever again, so your car will always look the most up to date model, no matter how long you keep it. And it's a smart looking car IMO.

My V60 is the 250 bhp petrol mild hybrid. It’ll do high thirties on a run, twenties around town. Lifetime average 35 mpg. MPG figures for the bigger, heavier V90 look optimistic, assuming it’s the same engine.
We have same engine in v60 cc and get the same mpg as above. I don’t like the Volvo engine much, the Volvo is not a car for spirited driving, no sport mode to sharpen throttle response.
