Is it OK to contact a previous owner to ask about the history of a car they'd owned?

Thanks.

Why not? They can always ignore you if they're not interested.

I thought DVLA had stopped giving previous owners addresses for some reason, but if you happen to find contact details in the handbook, then...I dunno.

I traded in a car and the new owner contacted me via Facebook, they got weird and a bit stty, was all odd! I only replied to them a couple of times.

Last thing I would want is someone contacting me about a car I used to own.

I think if it were something super niche and enthusiast-oriented or a classic I might consider it, but for an everyday car it's a bit weird. When I sell a car I don't really want to think about it again generally speaking.

Someone once sent me a PH DM saying they'd bought one of my previous cars (I assume they found the advert on here when I tried unsuccessfully to sell it) and to let me know it was still going strong.

No harm done, no offence taken etc.

I suspect it is down to the car in question, if it was some interesting car owned by an enthusiast they are more likely to be interested in having a chat versus a dull generic car many years later when some random is asking if they changed the brake fluid or similar.

Had someone write to us about an old car which we'd had written off, asking for the service history. I was in a generous mood so I stuck the service booklet in an envelope and posted it back to them.

I had an owner of a car I sold to dealer contact me, asking loads of questions about the car's history which I didn't have a clue about, and also why the service book had been wet at some point so was water damaged, again I hadn't a clue I only had the car about 6 months and it was like that when I bought it. The only thing that the previous owner told me was that he thought the car had been a press car as he had an article reviewing it with the car in the picture.

He then replied in a bit of a weird tone saying the car was not a press car in no uncertain terms.

I stopped replying.

It's a very dull old Civic, all I want to know is if it had a recent cam belt change because the service history is just a load of stamps.

It might save me £400, but it's no big deal.

Somebody wrote to me about a car I sold to a dealer, and which I assumed went to an auction. I was annoyed that they had got my name. This was a few years ago. I ignored them.

I was contacted by the next owner of our S-Max after it was written off in an accident. He'd found on old invoice in the car left because after the car was towed away and written off we never saw it again. He wrote to us because he was rebuilding the car and wondered if we had any service history. It was his lucky day because I was able to send him the entire service history, stamped book and all bills, I threw in two TV's that where at home as the brackets were in the car and a host of other bills and info I had on the car. It was his lucky day, but I believe in Karma and good things have happened to me.

What exactly would you want to know?

If the car has come with no service history then it's worth a shot to ask if the previous owner has it. If the car has service history, then what else would you want to know? I mean that's on you to do checks on the car.

If you just want to contact the owner of the car and be friendly, then fair enough but don't expect that person to respond or even be nice back.

Contact the servicing garages named on the stamps perhaps?

I did this for a BMW I bought which had full service history (ex company car) but no paperwork. Garages were super helpful and gave details of everything that was done to the car (even down to supplying and fitting a new set of wiper blades!) with dates and mileage. Ironically, when I went to trade the car in the service history was worthless as I could have made it all up!

Just generic stamps, no location. I called one of them and they had no record of the car because they didn't do the service.

Are you sure it has a belt and not a chain?

I would not reply, why would I open myself, to liability.

I’ve always left something with my name on it so anyone interested can find me on Facebook to ask anything they want. I take good care of my cars so always think it will probably reassure the owner.

I’ve contacted a previous owner before which came in handy when I had issues with a tuner.
