Looking to buy something like a disco, Q7, X5

It’ll be used for the odd longer family trip to sit alongside an EV which we use well for the everyday short journeys also for an occasional work trip of around 300miles that’s made maybe 10x a year.

Why a SUV well we’ve had one previously and loved it, miss it a bit plus occasionally we need the convenience of 7 seats plus luggage.

Looking at E70 X5, disco 4 and Q7.

Would prefer not to spend more than 10k as essentially this will be a 3rd car.

I was siding toward a X5, 10k would get me in a 12-13 plate with around 90k miles. Reading a bit on the N57 engines put me off a bit.

I guess what I’m after is any knowledge on any of these cars at 10-15yrs old. What goes wrong on them and whats going to be most reliable.

What goes wrong? On the Land Rover, everything.

If you're only looking at 3k miles a year, I'd be buying a naturally aspirated petrol car. Much less to go wrong than a 10-15yo turbo diesel. The 3.6 in this Q7 is essentially a larger version of the VW R32 engine, and VERY robust. This is what my money would go on. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202406190...

If you're not 100% set on an SUV (I only say this because your options to avoid massive bills are limited), something like this always struck me as a cool and alternative way to get a large family around. 7 seats, luggage space, comfort, plenty of toys, relatively reliable, an autobox mated to a petrol V6? https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202404038...

Prob more like 5-6k miles a year. 3000 is work miles, it would also be used when we go somewhere further afield as a family and also be car #2 for when my wife’s away in car #1, few days a week.

Didn’t really want a thirsty petrol. Already got one of those in car #3 rofl

For 5-6k a year, you're probably not going to notice a load of difference between petrol and diesel fuel costs.

5000 miles in a diesel at 30mpg would be about £1200. 5000 miles in a petrol at 20mpg would be about £1700.

One DPF/turbo/EGR diesel issue in your ownership, and that £500/yr saving is probably wiped out.

Q7 looks alright although a bit pricey for an 08. I’ve been mostly looking at the x5’s and can get a 12/13 plate for that sort of money.

A hard No to an Elgrand, no matter how good they may be, not what I’m after at all. I’ve done my time in people carriers when the kids were really wee, purposeful at the time but wouldn’t have another.

10k gets a decent amount of Volvo XC90 these days. Maybe a little bit older, but very well put together, very comfortable, and very capable.

The lady who used to look after my cats when I was away had a similar question. I said "not a Land Rover, they're unreliable PoS". She bought a Land Rover. It was an unreliable PoS, and was eventually disposed of for an Audi Q7. I think the final straw was a water leak into the cabin from somewhere.

She seems very happy with the Q7.

I'm less so, as the weight of the bloody thing appears to have destroyed the cement ramp up to my driveway!

That’s what we had previously had it from new for 5yrs.

Don’t fancy a Gen1 though.

Is 7 seats a must have?

If not I would be looking at a Lexus RX at that price point - uber reliable Hybrid SUV which is not too heavy on fuel and VED for the mileage.

ULEZ and similar schemes mean that you'll typically pay more for a slightly older petrol vs a pre-16 diesel. For the price of simplicity a couple of years wouldn't really bother me, but YMMV.

Think you missed the 7 seats part there, chief.
Yes I did, in which case why go for an SUV when you can get a Ford Galaxy.

VOLVO XC90 all the way

My wife has had one 5 years and it has been brilliant.
All its needed other than consumables is an intercooler.
Great on fuel, the D5 is pretty pokey and you can get tones of stuff in it
7 seats are there But can be folded away and stored
