All, as per other threads, both our cars have failed us (on the same day!) and we urgently need to find replacements. Nightmare.

I think I've found an old Civic as a direct replacement for my wife's car.

I need to replace by old E46 with a car that will fit 4 adults inside with luggage, be reliable and take us on holiday (up to 6 hour motorway trips usually).

Options vary wildly depending on how I'm feeling. I was looking at a '12 1.6 Zetec Focus, but now wondering if I should spend more and get something like a 1.4 Golf TSI SE - would be manual. They seem to be about £12k, @ 47k miles.

Are they reliable?

Any thoughts?

What to avoid?

What to look for?

Where to buy?

Other makes I'm looking at are Honda Civic, Seat Leon and Ford Focus. All manual.

Budget £12k max (outright).

Thanks very much.

I gather the later VAG 1.4TSIs with the cam belt are ok - the earlier ones with the cam chain weren't (varies according to the make and model, but iirc the changeover was around '13 and '14).

The older golfs can have issues, have you considered the Volvo V40?

Good space for 4 adults and comfortable. There’s a wide choice of specs and engines. They were based on a ford focus so maintenance isn’t too much trouble.

I owned a 2014 V40 D3, it was a good car. Equal to a later golf I owned.

2nd this. Our V40 has been brilliant after 6 years and nearly 45k miles in our ownership.

It's needed a new battery and one spring and that's pretty much it other than tyres.

Nice to drive, lovely gear change, excellent air con and stereo. Quite poky too. It's the 1.6 150 petrol turbo.

for 12k, you will be able to get into the bottom of the market for a 1.8 Corolla Hybrid in Icon Tech specification, that is where the smart money would go.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202407111...

If it has to be manual, then the Civic, but I would 1000000% go for the Corolla every time. Both cars offer bulletproof, sensible motoring. The Corolla is the simplest being non turbo. The Civic has a turbo but has a good reputation.

The 7.5 Golf is OK, but it would have to be the 2019 on 'Match Edition' specification. The 1.5 TSI is also superior to the 1.4 TSI. One thing to note is the 1.0 petrol and 1.6TDI has a torsion beam rear suspension and not a fully independent rear, which the 1.5 and 2.0 has. its not bad though it still rides well and the 1.0 sips fuel.

Wouldn't bother with the Focus, the new ones are cack compared to the competition. The old ones are dreadful with an interior like a prehistoric phone.

If you need something else, the new 2019 on Mazda3 is good in GT Sport or GT Sport tech spec, again, simple easy to maintain N/A engines.
Another option could be the Peugeot 308, you get a lot of kit for your money.

Thanks all.

I've moved on a bit, and pretty much decided on a Corolla - but possibly newer in order to benefit from the extended warranty.

Yes, for now, but then the plan is next spring the BMW replacement will be a Corolla.

ETA, the older of the Civics will be swapped for a Corolla. So when the dust settles, we will still have the newer, lower mileage Civic, and the dead BMW will become a Corolla.

I know things change quickly due to buying opportunities and different bits of advice, but based on what people have said, I can't see my opinion changing much on the fact that a used Toyota with an extended dealer warranty is the way to go for hopefully low-stress motoring for quite a few years.
