I’m interested in what others have done in this situation.

I’ve got a few cars and I need to slim them down due to lack of use.

I have young children and don’t get time to just go for a drive and I can’t see that changing anytime soon. So 2x MR2 Roadsters and a GR86 seems a bit crazy.

I have a Nissan Ariya on the way to fulfil the family duties. Cheap company car that suits the use case. I need a 2nd car that actually gets used and could be used as family weekend transport.

I’ve been thinking in need to sell the current cars and get something that’s more practical but can also be considered a fun car. But it probably needs to have 4 doors and needs to fit a rear facing baby seat in (GR doesn’t work unless one adult stays at home).

I like cars that are lightweight and have good handling.

I was considering a 3rd car and to keep the GR86 for when I’m on my own or have one child with me. But considering getting a car which replaces the current toys for a 2nd car that gets more use to site alongside the Ariya.

Does the car I’m looking for exist? I’ve been thinking an M5 comp or Panamera might be a better 2nd car. Or a Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Not sure they offer the fun I’m looking for. I’m not that interested in massive power so I’m not sure a big saloon is for me.

Interested to hear what others do who have young families and don’t have much time to drive toys which aren’t practical enough? I’ve come to the conclusion that a car that can do boring stuff but has a Jekyll and Hyde mode is probably better for me at the moment. I might have to do the school run then get 20 mins on a quiet road later in the day rather than be able to take a fun car for a blast.

Budget is c.£50k (ideally less) and would prefer something fairly new.

Or just have the Ariya as a kid wagon and the GR whenever I get the chance? 1600 miles in 9 months shows that isn’t very much.

Edited to add that I don’t want something that means the Ariya doesn’t get used. Like an m340i that I end up preferring and taking on every journey.

My wife got me thinking about this because she hasn’t warmed to the GR. Not auto. Finds the throttle/clutch difficult and seats uncomfortable. She asked why we don’t get rid of all the cars and get one decent car like a Porsche which got me thinking.

Well, i guess my situation was similar. I have an Mr2 roadster (currently undergoing a major refurb) that does around 1k a year, a model Y for the tax dodge and family trips out, but I then wanted something with 7 seats, capable of towing my little caravan and cheap, so ended up with a Jogger too.

I see you're a Toyota man. Apparently you can fit a rear facing seat in the lc500. I'd make it work somehow.

You might consider a Jaguar XFR-S. Though I don't have one, I do have a 5.0L XKR for the last 11 years and 215,000 miles, and it is the best automobile and engine I've ever owned in 57 years of driving. it is also the most reliable car I have ever owned and is still my daily driver. Since the XFR-S uses the same supercharged 5.0L V8 as my car and as the current F-type R, I would expect similar capabilities. I recommended to an acquaintance an XKR when his Guilia lease was ending and he borrowed my car over a weekend. He was stunned at the power and response, and ended up getting an XFR and has been happy with it since he got it about a year ago. Pricing should be well within your budget, and I believe in Europe you could get it in an estate version which would come in very handy with the kids and the car seats.

I can't really help.the OP, but I want to know what other family man with young children has a budget of £how fking much? for any car let alone "something fun"

Just to say I'm a Tad jealous and intrigued at where the money comes from, although I know it's absolutely none of my business.

For point of reference, when my kids were 1 and 4 years of age I had just become a chartered engineer, and we had 2 cars, one a Rusty 1275 sport metro, that I patched every time to get an MOT and a Citroën AX 1.4D because it was good on fuel. (Although it wasnt)

This is pistonheads we're all powerfully built company directors with a car for every occasion.
Even the retired on here buy a brand new car every couple of years and have ten foreign holidays a year.

The X351 Jag seems lightweight and is supposed to be a good handling barge.

I do like a Toyota. For some reason the Lexuses have never done anything for me. I’ve spent time in a few and never been impressed. The interior is too Toyota. Re LC500, I think any change has to be 4 door. I can’t imagine trying to get a baby into the back of a 2 door. It’s hard enough with a toddler where I have to put the seatbelt on even though he can get in himself.

Five door Fiesta ST? Will be more practical than the coupes mentioned but small enough to be amusing.

I’m not really a Jaguar man. The wing on the XFR-S puts me off instantly. It’s getting on a bit and I’d never get that past the wife who had to like it because she will drive it as well. She’s wants an M2 Comp but I don’t think 2 doors works for us at the moment. Which I guess is an M3 Saloon. I just know in a 2 door we would be going somewhere and always take the other car rather than wrestle 2 kids into the back of an M2.

Yes I know it’s a fortunate position to be in. The short answer is I’m an older dad and worked my bks off in my 20s and 30s which I could do because I didn’t have kids.

All great cars no doubt. I would have my GR86 over all of them.

A massive rear facing child seat won’t fit in the back with a passenger/driver in the front.

I don't know if a BMW M2 would have a bit more rear space? Probably still quite tight I'd guess.

Otherwise you're looking at hot hatches

Considered it. It doesn’t come in auto. A lot of our journeys sadly involve some traffic. A manual is a pain, literally.

Giulia

I have the veloce Ti. And it is good fun. The Quad will be better still.

It’s relatively light, definitely agile, steering feel and communication is very similar to my Lotus Evoras. They are not all that common so you get a bit of sense of occasion.

I much preferred it to the equivalent BMW’s and Audi’s I tried b

Drive a BMW M car or two. The M5 really is a “do it all” car, and is very capable. You say big power isn’t necessarily your thing, but young kids like the shove in the back from something quick. biggrin

I found once I had a child that the car needed to be able to take all of us plus some luggage or it never got used. For me it was difficult to justify time on my own just driving, so I aim to enjoy driving as much as I can when it's part of life.

For that I think a fast estate that has the driving characteristics you like is hard to beat.
