Lexus NX300h buying
Discussion
going to look at a few Lexus NX300h for the Mrs at the weekend.
Any owners on here with who can share their ownership experience and running costs with the hybrid system?
Wehave not had a hybrid before, just ICE petrol or diesel.
Our usage will mostly be town driving along with 10 - 20 mile dual carriage way runs, so I think that fits with how the hybrid system works to achieve decent economy.
Occasionally we do have longer runs on the motorway (~60 miles), maybe once a month, or head down south on holiday once or twice a year (200+ miles) - I'm guessing its these longer motorway trips where its mostly running on petrol only?
thanks

The Lexus hybrid system has worked the same for years so you are correct it will be all petrol on Motorway runs that will impact the fuel economy. The biggest issue with their hybrids in my view is the gearbox. They are CVT gearboxes and some people get on with them and some dont. Personally I dont like them so the cars are off the list. Go and drive one and see what you think dont let anyone sway you before you try.

I've got the 1.8 engine in a Toyota, it's actually an e-cvt gearbox, on mine 25mph is about its limit in electric, I think it's much better in town than on motorway.
Having said that I like it and would have another, the change between electric and petrol whilst moving is seamless.
Same, I have to 2.0l, E-CVT gear box in my Corolla. Sure the gear box does strain sometimes but for the majority of the journey I cant hear it. most of my journeys are Motorway or A roads and it will sit at 1500 to 2000 rpm all day long. As its an E-CVT transmission one thing I took for granted was no gear change, now when I am in other traditional auto car, I actually notice the gear change. Will I have another E-CVT? Yes. Next year ill be looking at another Toyota or a Lexus.
Edited to add the mpg. My 2.0l will achieve around 48pmg in winter on motorways and A roads. Summer 55mpg plus. This is a Toyota however near 200bhp and has loads of power when needed thanks to the battery back up, I would imagine the Lexus would be similar.

Just driving about normally with the flow of traffic there is no issue with cvt on a car like the NX. If you drive hard, lots of foot to the floor and hard cornering then more traditional gearboxes are preferable. But the NX is a luxury suv, not bc a sports car. The running costs will be mpg about high 30’s low 40’s probably, but the only money you’ll spend extra is standard servicing. It will never break down as the build quality/reliability is top drawer, better than pretty much everything. I think a very nice car as a family runabout, I’d recommend you/your wife tries one.
I owned a high mileage 2014 Premier spec for 4 years, bought in 2018. Biggest waste of money was going for the extended warranty, don't bother with that as despite 75k miles on purchase it was faultless.
As for MPG, I averaged 28mpg over the 4 years, granted a lot of shorter 5 mile trips usually with 5 of us in the car, about 7-8k a year. In summer I could eke out 32, winter would drop to mid 20's. So about half the 'official' mpg. Beautiful car but went fully electric after. Wouldn't go hybrid again.
The electric motor shuts off if over 50mph, but even when fully charged you get less than a mile range and have to accelerate like a snail to stop petrol engine kicking it.
Also aircon was probably one of the weakest systems I've had, chilled the air but didn't make my hands freeze like others, checked another NX at dealer and it was the same.
Servicing at lexus was v expensive, near £1000 for some worn pads, service and mot, and that was back in 2019.
Id have another lexus, considering a ux next year.

Had an NX350 the other week for a few days, did about 600 miles in it, pretty much all roads including motorway and most of the time was with 5 adults.
Impressed with it round town, bit harsh sounding at times if pulling away, not a fan of the CVTvut was a lovely drive and averaged well over 40mpg.
Door exit was annoying though, why they don't just use a normal handle I down know, mine was the F sport and the infotainment was great and wonder well with android auto.

I have an NX350, and the worst consumption I've had is 40mpg on a trip to Spa which was almost all motorway at French/ Belgian limit. In the UK getting high 40s on mix of local running, cross country A roads and motorway. It's at its most economical if the motorway is congested or involves lots of 50 limits, when it spends a lot of time running on the battery. Have seen over 50 mpg like this. Car is most suited to wafting about in comfort and is not the slightest bit sporty, which is exactly why I bought it, and CVT suits this useage. Also being a traditional hybrid, there is none of this messing about with charging cables .
Needless to say it is 100% reliable, and Lexus dealer service really is as good as all those surveys report.

Thanks, that's interesting. It's a good 8 months until I need to replace my car, but obviously I need to start the chase now!
I have a long commute so want comfort, and was thinking about a 3 litre diesel e class, cls, xf or similar, rather than a 4 pot. But then id be getting high 40s I assume, so the difference narrows.

Picked up a nx300hbf spoet last night. Drove from outside Edinburgh to West coast approx 70 miles. Enjoyed the drive, quite serene. Was doing under speed limit most if the way as wife was following in our other car, seen an indicated 48mpg which was pleasing.
Totally different driving experience from my departed Cayenne diesel. So far so good!
