The Mrs currently has a 2018 GLC250d, a nice car but she has never really gelled with it, partly due to the colour and partly due to wanting a Range Rover. She had previously swapped her beloved Evoque convertible for the GLC due to our son arriving.

I just hear the bad things regarding reliability and insurance woes and have attempted talking her into looking at other cars. We randomly looked at an Audi Q8 when passing a dealership to kill some time. A lovely car and she did like it, but they are a little pricier and she is still dead set on an LR product.

After getting quotes, it turns out the insurance is comparable with other marques and a somewhat reasonable price. But how's the reliability? Which engine should we be looking for?

Thanks in advance

You'll want the 3.0 in either form the 2.0's aren't the best:

Petrol:

Try showing her a DS7, they're a good option:

And within that the later straight 6 Ingenium straight six diesel is seemingly more reliable than the earlier V6 diesel.

Thanks! That echoes what a friend (Velar D300 owner and ex-JLR employee) has told me. Petrol models are a consideration due to only doing around 10000 miles pa.

As nice as the Citroen is, and offerings from the likes of Kia and Hyundai etc, she has a 'Range Rover' up on a pedestal and it's been there for years...there really is no telling her, and that's fine. I'm now just trying to make sure her eyes are open and we have a good warranty/GAP insurance as required.

The search is narrowed somewhat to a white (and only white) car, R-Dynamic HSE model. I actually showed her a P550 as a joke and she has taken a liking to it, despite the interior colour. Not sure she understands the difference in running costs of that model.

What year would I be looking out for to have the later engine?

The straight 6 (with mild hybrid) became available in early 2021. The only way I can tell the difference between V6 and Straight 6 visually is by looking at the steering wheel which seemed to change, perhaps there was a small facelift at the same time (though they both look identical to me).

On Autotrader the 3.0 V6 is listed as 3.0 SDV6, D275 or D300. The Straight 6 is D300 MHEV.

I would not touch the Ingenium 2 litre diesel with a bargepole but the 2.0 petrol is as robust as any other engine.

We bought a P300 a few months ago, very refined engine in the Velar, I was concerned about refinement and performance - perfectly happy on both fronts.Never seriously considered a diesel on the basis that I simply do not like them

Did consider the 3,0 supercharged six pot but for our purposes it was a case of "just because you can does not mean you should" - it would have been overkill for us. Bizarrely the P380 would have been cheaper to insure than the P300

Car does 15 miles each way daily and the odd 50+ mile round trip on A roads / B roads - overall average with my OH driving is about 29mpg, I rarely get less than 31mpg when I drive it

If my wife narrowed her car choice down to a make, I'd be getting rid. Far better cars available for the money if you're not worried about what other people think!

A bit extreme, but perhaps I should clarify that it isn't the name that she wants, but it's the look of the cars and the interiors that she likes. She isn't bothered about other people, she just knows what she likes. I'm just trying to do some damage control!

I think the P300 would suit us well. Though not as many to choose from

We've ruled out an SVA due to running costs, insurance, for example, is over 3x the other models.

We went to see a D240 yesterday which is the right spec and within budget. Not the engine of choice for me, but it's otherwise the perfect car for her. I'm hoping we can get a Land Rover warranty on the vehicle and perhaps keep the finance term short to keep options open in the future.
The main problem we have now is selling the current Merc which is likely to end up being in negative equity.

My mum picked up a 20 plate 240 Velar R-Dynamic at the start of the year and it is a lovely thing to drive. My dad and I also took one out on a LR experience day in Perth a couple of months ago and it is a fantastically capable offroad vehicle even on standard tyres and non adjustable suspension, should you ever feel the need smile

It replaced a 2017 2.0d F-Pace which she had for 5 years and gave zero problems.
